EQC 2017 Group H Preview

With European Quidditch Cup (EQC) 2017 rapidly approaching, the Quidditch Post takes a look at each of the teams competing in this year’s tournament.

Group H

Durhamstrang
By Hannah Dignum

Despite the departure of key graduates and others, Durham has performed surprisingly well this season at both Northern Cup and British Quidditch Cup (BQC).  However, this Durham squad struggles with physicality and aggression.

Group G

Titans Paris
By Hugues Ribayrol and Fraser Posford

As the two-time defending champions of Europe, the Titans Paris enter as the favorites to capture their third championship. The Parisians started the season by winning their first Barcelona Moustaches title, denying the Mighty and Amazing Quercs a historic threepeat in the process. They then went on to win their second consecutive French Cup, which serves as France’s EQC qualifier, with relative ease, beating local rivals Paris Frog 200*-100 in the final.

EQC 2017 Group F Preview

With European Quidditch Cup (EQC) 2017 rapidly approaching, the Quidditch Post takes a look at each of the teams competing in this year’s tournament.

Group F

Werewolves of London
By Hannah Dignum

As the recent third-place finishers at British Quidditch Cup, the Werewolves of London find themselves with a group they can comfortably top. However, a surprisingly lacklustre passing game and lack of true cohesion between their better players was exposed against Velociraptors QC in Rugeley, and there will be plenty of European teams equally capable of exploiting it. It is possible that under the watchful eye of Simon Bidwell, the Werewolves will have ironed out these creases and should therefore demonstrate a greater ability to come together as a team rather than a group of talented individuals.

Group E

Antwerp A
By Nick de Leu

Since reaching the final in last year’s EQC with a roster of only 14 players, Antwerp A (formerly known as Deurne Dodos) have managed to not only keep the band together, but they have also added a whole new section. In Mechelen, Belgium, close to their hometown Antwerp, Belgium, they will bring a full roster of 21.

Group D

Velociraptors Quidditch Club
By Fraser Posford

Fresh from their domination of British Quidditch Cup (BQC), the Velociraptors turn their eyes toward European glory. Earlier this month, Tom Heynes’ team convincingly won all of their matches on their way to their first BQC title, including a 180*-40 rout of rivals Werewolves of London in the semifinal, before an even bigger 260*-60 victory over the Bristol Brizzlebears in the final.

5 Things We Learnt from BQC

By Ashara Peiris, Hannah Dignum, and Jenny Benson

On the heels of British Quidditch Cup (BQC), the Quidditch Post’s UK staff takes a look at the stories of the tournament.

The community team era is here

With Velociraptors QC taking BQC, the community team era begins. Two of the three medallists were community teams, and all of the UK’s community teams made the upper bracket. With new community teams rumored to be starting next year in Stevenage and Oxford, it doesn’t seem that that they will be letting go of the top any time soon, particularly with a number of university teams such as Warwick Quidditch Club likely exhibiting significant turnover next year.

International Weekend Wrap-Up - February 11-12 and 18-19

Contributions by Yeray Espinosa Cuevas, Chula Bruggeling, Austin Wallace

There is a lot going on in the world of quidditch on any particular weekend, and most of us only see the stories immediately relevant to our regions. However, it can be very interesting to look outside of our own bubble every once in a while and take a look at the rest of the global community. To that end, each week the Quidditch Post collects information about tournaments and events that happened during the weekend around the world.

This week we are covering the Southwest Regional Championship, Spain’s Liga Centro, Spain’s Euskal Quidditch Liga, and tryouts for the Quidditch Premier League in the UK.

Five Things We Learnt From Hateful 8

By Fraser Posford and Ashara Peiris
Editor’s note: Ashara Peiris is a player for London Unspeakables. On the weekend of Jan. 28 and 29, the Hateful 8 tournament took place at Warwick University. With the top four teams from both North and South regions in attendance, this tournament provided us with a progress update for the status of elite quidditch in the UK. The tournament was split via a community/university divide into two groups of four for Day One, playing a round robin from which the top two from each group entered an upper bracket and the bottom two entered a lower bracket for Day Two. Here, we reflect on Velociraptors QC’s tournament victory as well as some other key observations from the tournament.

Velociraptors QC Take Home the Gold at Northern Cup

By Ashara Peiris

On the weekend of Nov. 12-13, the UK’s northern regionals were held in Durham for the second time. The newest community team, Velociraptors QC, eased their way to victory as expected, eventually triumphing 160*-30 against Durhamstrang — last year’s runners up — to take home the gold medal. Tornadoes QC — a rebranding of Taxes QC — took home the bronze medal and the final European Quidditch Cup (EQC) spot in overtime against last year’s bronze medallists Loughborough Longshots. So what did we learn?

Fly: The Review

By Ajantha Abey

Editor’s Note: Ajantha Abey, of Ajantha Abey Quidditch Photography, is the Visuals Director for the Quidditch Post, spent the 2015-16 season playing in the UK, and attended the IQA World Cup in Frankfurt.

If you were looking for a wonderful documentary that perfectly captures the magic and wonder of quidditch, Fly: Journey to Frankfurt, is not it. Fly is not here to tell the story of the game's origins, its fictional background, its worldly realisation, or its growth into a global community. Fly is about athletes and their journeys as sportspeople trying to achieve gold at the first proper Quidditch World Cup, and it tells that story magnificently. The gritty aesthetic in the title logo gives it away. There is no sugar coating on the dedication, desperation, determination, and heartbreak in the sport that Fly captures ― a sport that just happens to be quidditch.
