International Weekend Wrap-Up - January 28-29

Contributions by Bex McLaughlin, Fraser Posford, Jenny Benson, Serena Cheong, Alex Stewart, Austin Sharp, and Gabriel Bernardes There is a lot going on in the world of quidditch on any particular weekend, and most of us only see the stories immediately relevant to our regions. However, it can be very interesting to look outside of our own bubble every once in a while and take a look at the rest of the global community. To that end, each week the Quidditch Post collects information about tournaments and events that happened during the weekend around the world. This week we are covering the UK’s Hateful 8 and Compass Cup, USQ Northwest Subdued Excitement, USQ Southwest Diamond Cup V, USQ West Anthill Funkdown, and Brazil’s first national quidditch event.

World Cup 2016: Spotlight on Brazil | Copa do Mundo 2016: Foco em Brasil

By Andy Marmer
Tradução: Iuri Martins

History
Quidditch landed in Brazil in 2010 with the creation of the Rio Ravens and has since spread to five other teams, with two in São Paulo, one in Brasília, and one in Curitiba. In addition to the five established teams, three more are working to start up around the country. Given the cost and difficulties of travel, competition between the teams is rare and there has yet to be an official tournament in the country. None of the teams are university-affiliated. The country’s development was aided in January 2015 by the founding of the Associação Brasileira de Quadribol (ABRQ), which governs the sport for the 50-75 players nationwide.

Quidditch in Brazil

By Phill Cain

It is no secret that quidditch has been expanding with much momentum throughout the world. Last summer’s Global Games were proof that international competition is completely feasible and that the sport has already gained a strong foothold in at least seven nations. The Global Games also served as inspiration for non-participating countries to step up their game entirely, with the objective of being able to put forth a national team in time for the 2016 Games. This is no different in the country most famous for its beaches and athletic prowess in soccer. Quidditch, or quadribol, as its called in Portuguese, arrived in Brazil in 2010 with the emergence of the Rio Ravens, led by Vinicius Mascarenhas. It has since made slow progress in comparison to USQ, and the level of gameplay is similar to what some of us remember in the pre-World Cup V years. Teams almost exclusively consist of avid fans of the Harry Potter series, and events are often held in conjunction with conventions of various fandoms and fantasy themes.
