EQC 2017 Group G Preview

With European Quidditch Cup (EQC) 2017 rapidly approaching, the Quidditch Post takes a look at each of the teams competing in this year’s tournament.

Group G

Titans Paris
By Hugues Ribayrol and Fraser Posford

As the two-time defending champions of Europe, the Titans Paris enter as the favorites to capture their third championship. The Parisians started the season by winning their first Barcelona Moustaches title, denying the Mighty and Amazing Quercs a historic threepeat in the process. They then went on to win their second consecutive French Cup, which serves as France’s EQC qualifier, with relative ease, beating local rivals Paris Frog 200*-100 in the final.

Earlier this month, Tom Heynes’ team convincingly won all of their matches on their way to their first BQC title, including a 180*-40 rout of rivals Werewolves of London in the semifinal, before an even bigger 260*-60 victory over the Bristol Brizzlebears in the final.

International Weekend Wrap-Up - November 11-13

Contributions by Chula Bruggeling, Kyle Carey, Serena Cheong, Rebekah Page, Arjun Patel, Ashara Peiris, Carrie Soukup, Cameron VomBaur, and Austin Wallace

There is a lot going on in the world of quidditch on any particular weekend, and most of us only see the stories immediately relevant to our regions. However, it can be very interesting to look outside of our own bubble every once in awhile and take a look at the rest of the global community. To that end, each week the Quidditch Post collects information about tournaments and events that happened during the weekend around the world.

This week we are covering the Eastern and Western Canada Regional Championships, Coupe de France, the UK’s Northern Cup, the US’s Midwest Regional Championship, Next Best West, Hub City Cup, and Officially BAQC At It.

World Cup 2016: Spotlight on France | Coupe du Monde 2016: Lumière sur la France

By Fraser Posford

Traduction française plus bas

History
Quidditch came to France in 2011 with teams being created in Nantes, Lesparre-Médoc, Toulouse, and Paris. Since then, France has been one of the key nations in European quidditch. The first European Quidditch Cup (EQC) was hosted in Lesparre-Médoc in 2012, which Paris Phénix won, allowing them to qualify for World Cup VI. Following the demise of Phénix as a competitive entity in autumn 2014, Titans Paris rose from their ashes and have firmly established themselves as the most dominant team in Europe, winning the last two EQCs. Domestically, there have been two French Cups so far, with Paris Frog winning the first in Dec. 2014 and Titans Paris winning the second in Toulouse this past February. Although quidditch has been in France for five years now, the development of the sport within the country has been somewhat slow, particularly in comparison with the UK. Currently, there are roughly 350 active players in France. There is a core of 10 teams across France that compete in tournaments on a regular basis, with around 20 other emerging teams starting out.

Coach Bregeault talks Titans Journey to EQC 2016/Entraîneur Bregeault Parle du Voyage de Titans à EQC 2016

By Albert Bregeault, Translated to English by Etienne Pogu

La version française est en dessous

My name is Albert Bregeault, and I have been the Titans’ coach since their formation in November 2014. It is a real pleasure for me to talk to the Quidditch Post. I’ve been asked to give a personal approach, so this is what I am going to do, and I will speak in my name, not in my team’s.

For the second year in a row the team decided to trust me as their coach. This position allowed me to run three practices per week. Those practices are always open to everyone.

European Games 2015: Triumphs and Controversies

By Abby Whiteley

Introduction
On 25–26 July 2015, the inaugural European Games were held in Sarteano, Italy. Teams representing 12 European nations came together in the first tournament of its kind to play for the title of European champions. After a nail-biting final against the United Kingdom, France took the championship 80*-40, which followed its victory at the 2015 European Quidditch Cup (EQC) and established its position as the strongest quidditch nation in Europe. This tournament brought with it fantastic matches and exciting indications for the development of quidditch in Europe, as well as  a couple of controversies along the way. Here we will look at the performances of each national team and break down some of the conversations brought on by the tournament.

France Captures European Games Over UK

by Andy Marmer (French translation by Sherrie Talgeri and Morgane Leclerc)

A new chapter was added to one of quidditch’s most intense rivalries as the United Kingdom and France met again in a major tournament and, in following recent trends, the latter once again emerged on top, overcoming its rival 90*-50 in the finals of the first ever IQA European Games.

Stampeding to Sarteano: France

by Abby Whiteley (translated by Sherrie Talgeri and Morgane Leclerc)

Introduction

France has been a huge presence on the international quidditch scene ever since the first European Quidditch Cup (EQC), which took place in Lesparre, in southern France. Although its rate of growth has been slower than the United Kingdom’s and Norway’sother notable countries whose quidditch scenes emerged at around the same timeit has always produced top-tier teams. Ten teams attended its national tournament,  five of which made it to EQC; four of these teams made it into Division 1, and Titans Paris re-established itself as the best team in Europe by winning the championship. With extremely athletic players and a rapidly developing tactical core to their play, the French are sure to make an impact at European Games, and will doubtless be satisfied with nothing less than the crown.

EQC 2015 Group Predictions - Part 3 (G and H)

Group G
By Bex McLaughlin

Predictions
1. Southampton Quidditch Club 1 (SQC 1)
2. Paris Titans
3. METU Unicorns
4. Three River Dragons Passau

This is the group of death for two reasons. Firstly, Southampton Quidditch Club 1 , METU Unicorns, or Paris Titans could progress to Day Two and all three would be worthy of a place in the bracket. Secondly, because Three River Dragons Passau are making their international debut against the current British Champions, the extremely physical Turkish No. 1 team, and the French Cup’s silver medalists.

EQC 2015 Group Predictions - Part 2 (D - F)

Group D
By Ashara Peiris

Predictions
1. Deurne Dodos
2. Paris Frog
3. Oxford Quidlings
4. Quidditch Hussars

In Group D we have one of the most competitive in the entire group stages, with many of the teams having the chance to win their group and make a deep tournament run. The level of competition within this group, with two of the most feared teams in Europe making an appearance, should produce some excellent quidditch, and make it one of the most closely observed groups, as the team to top this group will certainly be a force to be reckoned with.

Onward to Oxford: Lille Black Snitches

As part of our efforts to preview all 32 teams competing in the European Quidditch Cup (EQC), the Quidditch Post is chatting with representatives from each team. Today we spoke with Laura Desquiens, a member of the Lille Black Snitches.
