Every team wants to leave the tournament the winner. Spectators can rest assured that each team present at the first annual Copa del Sur, which will be held Dec. 6-7 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, will play with a thirst for victory.

Teams from Buenos Aires – as well as one from Rosario, Argentina and one from Chile – will compete to be remembered as the first to win this historic tournament for Latin American quidditch, and crown themselves the champions. But who will it be?

We start our survey of the Argentinean teams with the Scarlet Fireballs, a team formed on Sept. 7, 2013 by a group of friends who went to see a local tournament and were inspired to form their own team. At first they only had six players recruited, but little by little they convinced people to join them and improved as a team; they are now one of the most significant teams in Argentinean quidditch, which is reflected by their second place finish at the 2015 Annual Tournament. This is a team with tactics that could be labelled as offensive, with a bit of a disorganized defense. “We are the team that scores more goals and has the most goals scored,” said Matias Puszczyk, current captain of the Fireballs. Their expectations for the Copa del Sur are to meet new people. While they are excited to encounter the teams from outside Buenos Aires and to enjoy the tournament, it is evident that their ambitions lie on the podium, a goal for which they have been training intensely. “We are a team that is expected to reach the final and we don’t want to let down those supporting us,” said Puszczyk.

Then there is the Cumulus Nimbus, the oldest team in Argentina. Founded on Sept. 6, 2012, it was started by a group of  college friends that shared a passion for the Harry Potter series. The only original members left are the captain of the team, Rocio Martino, and her younger brother Rodrigo. This team has seen some hard times, but lately it has been establishing a place for itself in Argentinean quidditch due to its teamwork and perseverance. The players’ tactics could be considered “malleable,” as they change depending on the opponent. “There are some times in which we need more speed and agility in our attack, and in some cases more impact,” said Rocio Martino. During this tournament, the team expects to demonstrate that it is a rival to be taken into consideration by the other teams. “We want to show them everything we have been working on and that we are not a weak team,”  said Rocio Martino.

Next on the list is the “Vengadores de Hogwarts” (Hogwarts´ Avengers), a team formed at the beginnings of 2014 by players of a team called “Wind Wizards” that disbanded in 2013. They have seen some notorious ups and downs, from being crowned champions of the 2014 Annual Tournament to losing most of their members; however, they may be ready to rebound. “the most loyal players stayed and, after a lot of effort, the team is back to a sizable number,” said Captain Agustina Cicchitti. Their tactics fluctuate depending on which players are on the field, but overall they maintain a solid defense based around their beaters. They expect to reach the podium this tournament but, most importantly, they hope to gain some experience and improve as a team. “I believe that beyond the result, there are some interesting matches ahead and we are filled with positivity,” said Cicchitti.

Another Argentinean team, the Black Birds, was started in 2012 under the name “Wood’s Army,” but changed their name the next year to distance themselves from the Harry Potter saga. While they have been numerous since the beginning, with over 20 registered members to date, they are the largest team in Argentina. The team has demonstrated that it is a rival to be reckoned with, given its history of victories – including their first-place finish in the recent Annual Tournament. The Black Birds have a tight defense and overall a very dynamic and strong offensive, and they are known to change tactics spontaneously mid-game. “We have a really versatile offense and that’s what gives us the advantage over other teams,” said Pablo Rocchi, a quaffle player on the roster for the upcoming tournament. Their current captain is Flavio Sueldo, and it seems that he does not only aspire to reach the podium, but to win the tournament itself – an aspiration he passes on to his own players to encourage them to go for another victory.

From the city of Rosario, Santa Fe, come the next participants: the Deathly Dragons. Founded Feb. 14, 2014, the team started with very few members; however, after an exhibition match performed at a convention this same year, new players have joined and the Dragons now count 22 members in their ranks. Sadly, there's not much we can say about their performance as the Copa del Sur will be their debut; as for for their tactics, they consider themselves more offensive. Their primary goal, according to their captain Joaco Orieta, is “to learn as much we possibly can from this tournament (…)– to squeeze every last drop possible as they say – from people who have played quidditch for so long and so next year being able to improve so much more.” Well, they can be sure that we are all expectant to see what they are made of in this tournament.

And last – but not least – of the Argentinean teams that will participate are the recently formed Night Owls. Founded between May and June of this year by a group of friends at a birthday party, they are the newest team that will take part in this championship. However, that does not imply that they shouldn’t be taken into account by the other teams. It is an integration of players that used to belong to other teams, and their current captain is Patricia “Paddy” Cardenas. Their style of playing is a balance of both offensive and defensive, with a solid defense from their beaters. For the Copa del Sur, their greatest aspiration is to prove themselves to various teams because, as they were created recently, they haven't had many chances to play. They have a competitive aim and it can be appreciated that this team aspires to do great things. “We hope to give a good image and demonstrate that we are another strong team in the making,” said Cardenas.

Now there's only one last team to talk about, and it's the very team that gives the Copa del Sur the title of  “international:” the Santiago Snidgets, who were a surprising addition to the teams in attendance. The team was founded in June of 2014, borne of a suggestion made by a student of the Catholic University of Chile to their student council in which she expressed her desire of having quidditch as a sport on their campus. Shortly after, the team was created, and the current captain is Cristian Baeza. There isn’t much to say about their tactics, because no one has ever seen them play, but they describe themselves as having a defensive approach. They are focusing on empowering the skills of each of their players and improving their on-pitch communication. Their expectations are modest, because the Copa del Sur will be their first tournament – and their first complete match against another team – but Nelson Andrés, a player on the team explained: “everything that occurs inside and outside the field will allow us to earn experience (...); we have prepared ourselves to play as good as possible and we want to fight a dignifying battle against all the teams and win one or two encounters.” As with the Rosarine Deathly Dragons, the community is impatiently waiting to see what the Snidgets are capable of.

From what we can observe of each team, the most probable outcome is that the final will be a clash between two of the most experienced teams, such as Scarlet Fireball, Cumulus Nimbus, Vengadores de Hogwarts, and the Black Birds; either way, we cannot put aside the fact that the Night Owls, Deathly Dragons or Santiago Snidgets might surprise us and take the prize home. It is also possible that the outcome of the Annual Tournament may repeat itself at this tournament as far as the Argentinean teams are concerned, but given that all teams have learned from their victories and defeats in that tournament, it is not possible to know who may defy this prediction. All we have left is to impatiently wait and see which team will claim victory, making itself a place in history as the champion of the first international South American tournament.

“El ganador de la copa es…”

Es la frase que muchos equipos quieren completar con su nombre, en especial ahora que se disputará el primer torneo sudamericano internacional el 6 y 7 de Diciembre en Argentina.  Competirán los equipos bonaerenses, más un equipo de Rosario y uno de Chile, por ser recordados como los primeros en ganar este histórico torneo, y consagrarse como campeones de este muy esperado torneo. ¿Pero quién lo será? Para dar una idea, hablaremos un poco brevemente de cada equipo así usted puede sacar sus conclusiones.

Primero comenzaremos con los equipos argentinos mencionando a los Scarlet Fireball, un equipo que comenzó el 7 de septiembre de 2013 a partir de que un grupo de amigos que fue a ver un torneo local y los inspiró a formar un equipo propio. Al principio eran solo seis personas, pero de a poco fueron juntando gente y mejorando, y ahora son uno de los equipos con más presencia en el quidditch argentino, reflejado en su segundo puesto en el torneo anual 2015. Este es un equipo que en lo táctico se define como ofensivo, siendo en la defensa un poco desorganizados. “Somos uno de los equipos que más goles hace y más goles le hacen”, comenta Matías Puszczyk, actual capitán de los SF. Sus expectativas para el actual torneo son conocer gente nueva y disfrutarlo, aunque igualmente se nota que tienen deseos de llegar al podio, y para lo cual han estado entrenando duramente. “Somos un equipo del cual se espera que de mucho y pueda llegar a la final, y no queremos defraudar eso” comentó también Puszczyk.

Luego están los Cumulus Nimbus, el equipo más longevo que existe en la Argentina. Fundado el 6 de Septiembre de 2012, comenzó siendo un grupo de amigos de la facultad que compartían el gusto por la saga de Harry Potter, de los cuales sus únicos miembros originales actualmente son su capitana, Rocío Martino, y su hermano Rodrigo. Este equipo ha pasado por momentos difíciles, pero que últimamente se ha ido imponiendo en el quidditch argentino, por su buen trabajo en equipo y su perseverancia. Su táctica se puede considerar maleable, cambiándola dependiendo del rival. “Hay veces que en el ataque necesitamos más velocidad y agilidad, y en otras más fuerza” comenta Martino. Ellos esperan en esta copa demostrar que son un contrincante a considerar por los otros equipos. “Queremos demostrar todo lo que estuvimos trabajando y que no somos un equipo débil”, comenta también Martino.

En la lista siguen los Vengadores de Hogwarts,  equipo formado a principios del 2014 a partir de jugadores del equipo Wind Wizards, disuelto a fines del 2013. Este equipo ha tenido altibajos muy notorios, con momentos de gloria como ganar el torneo anual del 2014, y con momentos difíciles por falta de jugadores notoria (a veces solo eran 6 en cancha),”pero los jugadores más fieles se quedaron y después de mucho esfuerzo el equipo volvió a tener un gran número de ellos” comenta Agustina Cicchitti, tercera Capitana. Sus tácticas fluctúan dependiendo de cuáles de sus jugadores entran en cancha, pero siempre mantienen una defensa sólida de parte de sus golpeadores. Sus expectativas para este torneo son para el podio, pero de todas formas lo que más les importa es la experiencia y poder mejorar como equipo. “creo que más allá del resultado se van a jugar partidos interesantes y tenemos mucha positividad” agrega Cicchitti.

Otro equipo argentino son los Black Birds, que comenzaron en 2012 llamándose los Wood´s army, pero al año siguiente cambiaron su nombre para desligarse un poco de la saga de Harry Potter. Desde sus comienzos siempre fueron numerosos, con más de 20 jugadores inscriptos actualmente siendo el más numeroso de argentina, y en líneas generales siempre han demostrado que son un rival a tener muy en cuenta por los otros equipos, dado su historial de victorias incluida la de este año en el torneo anual. En su táctica ellos tienen una defensa cerrada y un ataque muy dinámico y fuerte en general, aunque también suelen cambiar su manera de afrontar el juego de manera muy espontánea. ”Tenemos un ataque muy versátil, y eso es lo que nos da la ventaja frente a otros equipos” opina Pablo Rocchi, uno de sus jugadores.  Actualmente su capitán es Flavio Sueldo, y por lo visto él no solo aspira al podio sino a ganar el torneo en sí, ansias que les contagia a sus propios jugadores para animarlos a conseguir otra victoria.

De la ciudad de Rosario, provincia de Santa Fe, estarán participando Los Deathly Dragons. Fundado el 14 de Febrero de 2014, comenzó con muy pocos jugadores; pero a partir de una convención a la que asistieron e hicieron un partido de exposición este año, se han incorporado más jugadores hasta llegar a los 22 que son actualmente. Lamentablemente no se puede hablar mucho acerca de cómo actúan en la cancha porque la Copa del Sur será su torneo debut, pero con respecto a sus tácticas ellos mismos consideran que son ofensivos. Su único objetivo, según su capitán Joaco Orieta, es “aprender todo lo más posible en este torneo (...)sacar todo el jugo posible, de personas que juegan Quidditch hace mucho y así el año que viene poder entrenar mucho más.” Bueno, ellos pueden estar seguros de que todos estaremos a la expectativa de lo que ellos demostrarán en este torneo.

El último de los equipos argentinos que jugarán, pero no el de menor importancia, son los recientemente surgidos Night Owls. Fundados entre Mayo y Junio de este año por un grupo de amigos en una fiesta de cumpleaños, son el equipo más nuevo que va a participar, aunque eso no implica que no se lo deba tener en cuenta. Está integrado por gente que perteneció a otros equipos, y actualmente su capitana es Patricia “Paddy” Cardenas. Su forma de juego puede considerarse tanto ofensiva como defensiva, con un ataque en varios casos efectivo pero también con una buena defensa de parte de los golpeadores. De la Copa del Sur a lo que más aspiran es a probarse con varios equipos, ya que por ser un equipo reciente no han tenido muchas chances de jugar; aunque igualmente tienen una mentalidad competitiva y se puede apreciar que es un equipo que aspira a mucho. “Esperamos dar una buena impresión y poder demostrar que se puede formar otro equipo fuerte” comentó con mucha ansia Cardenas.

Ahora solo nos queda hablar de un último equipo, y nada menos el que le da el título de “internacional” a esta copa. Me refiero a los Santiago Snidgets, que nos sorprendieron a todos al decirnos que participan en este campeonato. Se fundó en Junio del 2014 a partir de una sugerencia de una alumna de la Universidad Católica de Chile al centro de estudiantes de que le gustaría que se practicara quidditch como un deporte en su campus. Se toma en cuenta la propuesta y el equipo es creado, siendo su actual capitán Cristian Baeza. Con respecto a tácticas tampoco podemos decir mucho, ya que no los hemos visto jugar, pero ellos declaran que son más defensivos, enfocándose potenciar en las habilidades de cada jugador y en la comunicación en la cancha. Sus expectativas son modestas, ya que la Copa del sur será su primer campeonato (y sus primeros partidos completos), pero Nelson Andrés comenta que “todo lo que ocurra dentro y fuera de la cancha será ganancia en experiencia para nosotros (...) nos hemos preparado para jugar lo mejor posible y queremos presentar digna batalla contra todos y ganar uno o dos encuentros.” Como con los Rosarinos, esperamos con ansias ver de lo que ustedes son capaces.

Por lo que se puede observar de cada equipo, lo más probable es que los equipos argentinos más experimentados como los Scarlet, Cumulus, Vengadores y Black tengan mayores chances de disputar la final de la copa, aunque no podemos descartar que los Night, los Deathly, y los Santiago nos sorprendan y se llevan el premio a casa. Cabe la posibilidad de que se repitan los resultados del torneo anual, pero dado que todos los equipos aprendieron tanto de sus errores y sus aciertos durante el mismo, no hay manera de decir quien desafiara este pronóstico, por ahora lo único que queda por hacer es esperar impacientes a ver qué equipo llegará  a la victoria y se hará un lugar en la historia como los campeones del primer torneo sudamericano internacional.
