Introduction
Early 2014 marked the emergence of quidditch in the Netherlands as Bram Vries and Jerona van der Gevel joined forces to introduce it to the country. A high school team, NILS Quidditch, was established at around the same time. A quidditch presence at a fantasy fair called Elfia Haarzuilens in April 2014, followed by a series of open practices during the summer of that year, brought quidditch to the attention of more people, and the North Sea Nargles developed as a result. Four regular teams now exist in the Netherlands, with more interest elsewhere promising to expand the region. The Netherlands had two representatives at the Benelux Cup, the regional tournament for the Belgium, Luxembourg, and Netherlands area. These two teams, the Wageningen Werewolves and North Sea Nargles, also attended the European Quidditch Cup in April this year, so the Flying Dutchmen at the European Games represents the culmination of a very prolific season for the Netherlands on the international scene.

The Leadership
Coach
The team is being coached by Bram Vries, one of the founding members of the North Sea Nargles and an executive member of Muggle Quidditch Nederland, the national governing body of quidditch in the Netherlands. His knowledge of Dutch quidditch is therefore unparalleled, and he will be able to use his detailed knowledge of the game to mould the Flying Dutchmen into a united team.
Captains
The Flying Dutchmen are employing a pair of co-captains to lead them on the day; Jerona van der Gevel of the North Sea Nargles and Nick van Klaveren, captain of the newly established Dom Tower Dementors, will be jointly taking charge of the team. Van Klaveren’s experience of helping to coach the Wageningen Werewolves, as well as his ability to direct the game as a keeper, makes him a good choice for a captain. Van der Gevel is able to balance out his knowledge with her experience in the beater game in the Netherlands following up on her experience alongside NTNUI Rumpledunk at European Quidditch Championship (EQC) 2014.
Commentary
Thanks to its size, the Netherlands quidditch scene is quite close-knit, which enables the team to hit the ground running in terms of making sure the players all know one another and how they can best play together. The team’s leaders cite this as one of its greatest strengths; the team has been able to practise together several times, which will have given the players plenty of time to learn how to maximise their potential alongside one another. This will be particularly useful to keepers Rein Aspach and Nick van Klaveren, as they have had ample practice at directing their team and understanding how their players operate. It is particularly necessary that a team learns to trust the authority of those directing it, so this aspect of the Dutchmen’s play should be well-established. A player to look out for is Marit Epskamp, who will be making her début as a seeker at this tournament, and who has grown into a fierce and tenacious player over the past few months. Epskamp, alongside Hanna Bouma (captain of the North Sea Nargles) and Noah Vissenberg, represents the Dutch team’s chances of making the most of a SWIM situation, and it is exciting to hear that it has some aces up its sleeve in the seeker department.
Like Poland and Germany, the Netherlands has had a surprising presence this season given its former complete absence in international competition. It is one of the smaller squads, with only 13 players, but the fact it is making an appearance at all demonstrates impressive dedication on the part of the community. The Netherlands has come a long way in a year and a half, and it is bound to keep expanding during the next season. When it comes to the Flying Dutchmen, one thing is certain: whether they win or lose, they will emerge from European Games as stronger players and as a stronger community for it.
Prediction
The Dutch teams at last year’s EQC struggled to make their presence felt, and so it seems reasonably unlikely that they will be challenging the more experienced nations for their spots in the quarterfinals. The Netherlands’ closest competition in Group A, therefore, will be Germany and Ireland, the other teams representing young nations. Germany generally outperformed the Netherlands at the EQC, and it has the larger squad of the two, so the Dutchmen will have to work hard to challenge it, although a sneaky win is not entirely out of their grasp. The matchup of the Netherlands and Ireland will be interesting; the Netherlands is the larger squad, with more international experience throughout the team, but Ireland does feature some very impressive talent from the United Kingdom which may tip the balance. There are four spaces available in Group A for the quarterfinals, so the Netherlands could advance if it beats both Germany and Ireland, but this will be a tough day for the team.

Begin 2014 markeerde de opkomst van quidditch in Nederland, door een samenwerking tussen Bram Vries en Jerona van der Gevel om het in Nederland the introduceren. Een middelbare school team, NILS Quidditch, werd rond dezelfde tijd opgezet. De aanwezigheid van quidditch op een fantasy fair (Elfia Haarzuilens) in april 2014, gevolgd door een serie van open trainingen gedurende de zomer van dat jaar, bracht quidditch onder de aandacht van meer mensen, en de North Sea Nargles ontstonden als resultaat daarvan. Commentaar
Dankzij het kleine formaat is de Nederlandse quidditchgemeenschap een hechte groep, waardoor ze er zeker van kunnen zijn dat alle spelers elkaar kennen en hoe ze het beste met elkaar samen kunnen spelen. De leiders van het team noemen dit dan ook als een van hun grootste krachten; het team heeft meerdere keren samen kunnen trainen, wat de spelers genoeg tijd heeft gegeven om hun samenwerking te maximaliseren. Dit zal vooral nuttig zijn voor keepers Rein Anspach en Nick van Klaveren, omdat ze genoeg hebben kunnen oefenen in het aansturen van het team en begrijpen hoe hun spelers reageren. Het is vooral belangrijk dat een team leert te vertrouwen op degene die hun aansturen, dit onderdeel van het spel van de Nederlanders zou dus goed gevestigd moeten zijn. Een speler om naar uit te kijken is Marit Epskamp, die haar debuut als seeker zal gaan maken op dit toernooi, en die in een velle en vasthoudende speler is veranderd de afgelopen maanden. Epskamp, naast Hanna Bouma (captain van de North Sea Nargles) en Noah Vissenberg, representeren de kans van het Nederlandse team om het beste te maken van een SWIM situatie, en het is goed om te horen dat ze iets achter de hand hebben wanneer het op seekers aankomt.
Voorspelling
De Nederlandse teams op de EQC hadden moeite om hun aanwezigheid voelbaar te maken, en daardoor lijkt het onwaarschijnlijk dat ze met de meer ervaren teams om een plaats in de kwartfinales zullen strijden. Nederland’s meest directe concurrenten in Groep A zullen daardoor Duitsland en Ierland zijn. Over het algemeen deed Duitsland het beter dan Nederland tijdens de EQC, en het heeft de meeste spelers van de twee teams, de Nederlanders zullen dus hard hun best moeten doen om Duitsland uit te dagen, maar een sneaky overwinning is niet helemaal buiten bereik. De wedstrijd tussen Nederland en Ierland zal interessant worden; Nederland heeft het grootste team, met meer internationale ervaring over het team verspreid, maar Ierland heeft een aantal talenten uit de UK die de balans kan doen doorslaan. Er zijn vier plaatsen voor de kwartfinales beschikbaar in Groep A, dus kan Nederland doorgaan als ze zowel Duitsland als Ierland verslaan, maar dit zal een zware taak voor het team worden.
