History

Quidditch arrived in Turkey in March 2014. A group of students from Middle East Technical University (Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi, ODTÜ) in the city of Ankara decided to bring the sport to their campus and formed two teams: METU Unicorns and ODTÜ Hippogriffs. Being the heart of quidditch, Ankara then gave birth to three more teams. The sport grew exponentially in a very short time and today Turkey has nine teams registered to Quidditch Derneği (QD), the national governing body for quidditch in the country; all the teams are community teams except Bilkent Foxes of Bilkent University, though all the teams are based around universities, able to use their facilities and talent base, and are also able to recruit players from the larger community. Currently there are over 200 players spread among these nine teams in the community. The teams compete in the Turkish Quidditch League throughout the year, where every team plays with each other twice during the season, and at the end of the season they compete for the Turkish Quidditch Cup ( TQK). Turkey came to the international stage for the first time in 2015, at Tournoi International de la Violette in Toulouse, France with a merc team composed of ODTÜ Hippogriffs and METU Unicorns players; they took third place and impressed everyone. That same year, the METU Unicorns — the undefeated winner of TQK — went to European Quidditch Cup (EQC) 2015 in Oxford and took 18th place. This year, Turkish quidditch has gotten even better; METU Unicorns, İTÜ Honeybees, and BOUN Centaurs took fourth, 13th and 25th place, respectively at EQC 2016.

Squad

The Team Turkey coach was chosen by a committee put together by QD, and then joined the committee to choose the 35 players for the training squad. Coach Kaan Bolat (METU Unicorns) chose Ecem Bedriye Satıcı (BOUN Centaurs) as his assistant coach, and together they finalized the 21-player roster. The team will be led by co-captains Fatih Aykurt of METU Unicorns, who was voted the best keeper in EQC 2016, and Çağatay Ural of BOUN Centaurs, who represented Turkey on a national level in golf.

The team is composed of eight Unicorns, four METU Minicorns, four Centaurs, three Hippogriffs, and one Honeybees players. Keeper and captain Fatih Aykurt is the biggest weapon of the team, along with world class chaser Sıla Yüksel, who was voted for the MVP squad of EQC 2016. Çağatay Ural’s blocking skills, along with the strength of Ahmet Can Karakadılar and Sertaç Alptekin, will be instrumental for the defense. Team Turkey shines in the beater line-up with Turkish-Duquette Umut Yeşilkaya (also voted for MVP squad of EQC 2016), veteran beater Ekin Berkyürek and agile Arman Aktürk.

Interview with Kaan Bolat

We spoke with Coach Kaan Bolat, who discussed the Turkish national team and their goals for the tournament.

Quidditch Post: Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Kaan Bolat: I’ve been playing quidditch since it first started in Turkey and on our campus. I coach the two teams that comprise Unicorns Quidditch; I have also coached METU Dragons in Toulouse and played for Team Turkey at European Games 2015.

QP: Do you think you can win the World Cup?

KB: I believe with a bit of luck and synergy, it is possible that we play in the final. We have already showed several times how good Turkish teams can be, and a medal is definitely our goal.

QP: How do you plan on achieving that synergy?

KB: We have been holding Team Turkey trainings once a month since February, and we’ve scheduled a training camp for 10 days before the tournament. The aim is to unveil the true potential and depth of our talent.

QP: Are there any teams you’re keen on playing?

KB: We would definitely like to play the USA, Canada, and Australia if possible; I believe there is a lot to experience with and learn from these teams.

QP: How will the World Cup affect quidditch in Turkey?

KB: The squad is already motivated and hungry for glory. I believe achieving a medal will increase interest in the sport in Turkey, resulting in more teams and more improvement in the arena.

Analysis

Team Turkey entered the quidditch stage at European Games 2015 and was largely disappointing. This time they’ll be aiming higher after some impressive results by the Turkish teams at the European Quidditch Cup 2016.

Team Turkey has a lot of powerful quaffle players, but the most influential will no doubt be EQC 2016 MVP keeper Fatih Aykurt. Aykurt is an incredibly agile keeper who loves making runs, both to score and to throw the defence off balance to create empty space for his teammates, and he will be at the center of Turkish quaffle play. Aykurt will be joined by tireless chasers Ahmet Can Karakadılar, Sertaç Alptekin, and Olgaç Can Öztürk, who have been great at both defense and offense all season in the Turkish Quidditch League. Team Turkey will try to play a patient passing game and exploit the holes in their opponents’ defence with quick drives.

Turkey has a large pool of female chasers and this results in Team Turkey having one of the best female chaser line-ups. Sıla Yüksel, who was also in the EQC 2016 MVP squad, and Centaurs coach Ecem Bedriye Satıcı will be in the spotlight as they take down people twice their size.

The beater game is where Team Turkey really shines. Two of the most experienced names in Turkish quidditch, Hippogriffs ex-captain Ekin Berkyürek and Unicorns captain Kamil Urgun, will be organising the bludger play with help from EQC 2016 MVP Umut Yeşilkaya and Centaurs captain Arman Aktürk. The Turkish beating game will rely heavily on male beaters with some support from their female counterparts. Turkey has a lot of talented beaters and almost everyone plays an aggressive beating game and this shows in Team Turkey.

The biggest problem on the Turkish side is seeking. Although there are six players who can play as a seeker on the squad, none of them are used to facing high-level snitches, and this might cause problems in close games.

Team Turkey had four training sessions and a 10-day training camp together and they look ready for World Cup. Facing Team UK in their first game won’t be an easy task, but they have to overcome such challenges to reach their goal of getting a medal.

Dünya Kupası 2016: Türkiye İncelemesi

Quidditch Türkiye’de kendini ilk defa 2014 yılının mart ayında gösterdi. Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi’nden bir grup öğrenci sporu kendi kampüslerine getirmeye karar verdi ve METU Unicorns ile ODTÜ Hippogriffs adında iki takım kurdu. Bu andan sonra quidditch sporunun Türkiye’deki kalbi olan Ankara, üç takıma daha ev sahipliği yaptı; beklenenin çok üstünde bir hızda ve çok kısa sürede ülkeye yayılan sporun, Türkiye’de quidditch ile ilgili resmi işleri yürüten organı olan Quidditch Derneği’ne (QD) bağlı, hali hazırda dokuz takımı bulunmaktadır. Bu takımların hepsi üniversite tabanlı olup, Bilkent Foxes dışında yine hepsi topluluk takımlarıdır. Bugün 200’den fazla oyuncunun oluşturduğu Türkiye quidditch yapılanması, 9 takımın sezon boyunca birbiriyle ikişer defa mücadele ettiği Türkiye Quidditch Ligi ile lig bitiminde bir hafta sonu süren bir turnuva olan Türkiye Quidditch Kupası’ndan (TQK) oluşmaktadır. Türkiye, uluslararası quidditch camiasında kendini ilk olarak 2015 yılının Ocak ayında Toulouse Muggle Quidditch’in düzenlediği Tournoi International de la Violette adlı turnuvada göstermiş, ODTÜ Hippogriffs ve METU Unicorns oyuncularından oluşan karma bir takım olan METU Dragons burada üçüncü olarak herkesi etkilemiştir. Aynı sene, ilk Türkiye Quidditch Kupası’nın namağlup şampiyonu METU Unicorns, Oxford’da düzenlenen Avrupa Quidditch Kupası’nda (EQC) 32 takım arasından 18. olmuştur. Türkiye’de quidditch, bu sene geçen senekinden de hızlı ilerlemiş, ve ülkenin Avrupa Quidditch Kupası’na katılan üç takımı METU Unicorns, İTÜ Honeybees ve BOUN Centaurs sırasıyla dördüncü, on üçüncü ve yirmi beşinci sırayı almışlardır.

Kadro

Team Turkey koçu QD tarafından oluşturulan bir komitenin seçimiyle METU Unicorns’a da koçluk yapan Kaan Bolat olarak belirlendi, ardından koçun da katılımıyla komite adaylar arasından 35 kişilik bir kadro belirledi. Sonunda ise, Kaan Bolat, BOUN Centaurs koçu Ecem Bedriye Satıcı’yı yardımcı koç olarak belirledi ve bu ikili 35 kişi içinden 21 kişilik kadroyu seçti. Takıma liderlik etmesi için ise EQC 2016 MVP kadrosuna seçilen METU Unicorns tutucusu Fatih Aykurt ile Türkiye’yi golf sporunda da milli olarak temsil eden BOUN Centaurs tutucusu Çağatay Ural kaptanlar olarak görevlendirildi.

Takım hali hazırda sekiz Unicorns, dört Minicorns, üç Hippogriffs, dört Centaurs ve bir Honeybees oyuncusundan oluşmakta. Tutucu Fatih Aykurt ile yetenekleri dünya çapında olup yine EQC 2016 MVP kadrosuna seçilmiş olan kovalayıcı Sıla Yüksel, takımın en güçlü silahları arasında bulunmakta. Çağatay Ural’ın blok yetenekleri ile Ahmet Can Karakadılar ve Sertaç Alptekin’in gücü ise takımın defansif dayanaklarını oluşturuyorlar. Team Turkey vurucu kadrosu ise kendi takımında Türk Duquette olarak adlandırılan, ve yine EQC 2016 MVP kadrosunda bulunan, Umut Yeşilkaya ile tecrübeli keskin nişancı Ekin Berkyürek ve çevik Arman Aktürk ile ön plana çıkıyor.

Quidditch Post: Bize biraz kendinizden bahseder misiniz?

Kaan Bolat: Türkiye’de ve kampüsümüzde ilk başladığından beri quidditch oynuyorum. Unicorns Quidditch grubunun iki takımına da koçluk yapıyorum, bunun yanında METU Dragons takımına koçluk yaptım ve 2015 Avrupa Oyunları’nda Team Turkey için oynadım.

QP: Dünya Kupası’nı kazanabileceğinizi düşünüyor musunuz?

KB: Biraz şans ve uyum ile finalde oynama şansımızın olduğuna inanıyorum. Türkiye takımlarının ne kadar iyi olabileceğini şimdiye kadar birkaç kere gösterdik, madalya almak ise kesinlikle hedeflerimizden biri.

QP: Bu uyumu nasıl yakalamayı düşünüyorsunuz?

KB: Şubat ayından beri her ay takımca antrenmanlar yapıyoruz, turnuvadan kısa bir süre öncesine ise 10 günlük bir kamp dönemi koyduk. Amacımız takımdaki derin yetenek havuzunun gerçek potansiyelini ortaya çıkarmak.

QP: Özellikle oynamak istediğiniz takımlar var mı?

KB: Mümkünse Amerika, Kanada ve Avustralya ile kesinlikle oynamak isteriz. Bu ülkelerden öğrenilecek çok şey olduğuna inanıyorum.

QP: Dünya Kupası sizce Türkiye’de quidditch sporunu nasıl etkileyecek?

KB: Şu anki kadromuz oldukça motive ve başarıya aç, turnuvadan bir madalya ile dönmemizin Türkiye’de spora ilgiyi arttıracağını ve ülkede yeni takımların kurulmasına önayak olacağını, dolayısıyla da sporu çok daha ileriye taşıyacağını düşünüyorum.

Analiz

Team Turkey, quidditch sahnesine 2015 Avrupa Oyunları ile girdi ve nispeten hayal kırıklığı ile ayrıldı. Bu sefer, özellikle de 2016 yılı boyunca alınan etkileyici sonuçlarla beraber, daha yukarıyı hedefliyorlar.

Takımın oldukça güçlü quaffle oyuncuları olduğu aşikar, ancak bu oyuncular arasından en tehlikelisi şüphesiz EQC 2016 MVP oyuncusu Fatih Aykurt. İnanılmaz derecede çevik bir tutucu olan Aykurt, bu yeteneğini hem bireysel olarak sayı yaratmak hem de rakip savunmanın dengesini bozmak için yaptığı koşularla ön plana çıkarıyor, bu sebeple de Türk takımının quaffle oyununda merkez oyuncu olması kaçınılmaz. Fatih’in yanına neredeyse hiç yorulmayan Ahmet Can Karakadılar, Sertaç Alptekin ve Olgaç Can Öztürk gibi sene boyunca Türkiye liginde hem savunma hem hücumda büyük işler yapmış quaffle oyuncuları ile, sabırlı pas oyunuyla rakip savunmasındaki boşluları hızlı değerlendirmeye dayalı bir oyun sistemi eklenince, Team Turkey hiç de hafife alınmayacak bir takıma dönüşüyor.

Türkiye’nin kalabalık kadın kovalayıcı havuzu da kadronun güçlü bir kadın kovalayıcı rotasyonuna sahip olmasını sağlıyor. Sıla Yüksel ve Ecem Bedriye satıcı gibi oyuncular, kendilerinin iki katı boyuttaki rakiplerini alaşağı ederek dikkatleri üzerlerine çekiyorlar.

Vurucu oyunu ise Türkiye’nin gerçekten kendini gösterdiği alanlardan birisi olarak göze çarpıyor; ülkenin en deneyimli oyuncularından olan ODTÜ Hippogriffs eski kaptanı Ekin Berkyürek ile METU Unicorns kaptanı Kamil Urgun, 2016 EQC MVP kadrosundan Umut Yeşilkaya ve BOUN Centaurs eski kaptanı Arman Aktürk’ün yardımıyla sağlam bir vurucu oyunu organize ediyorlar. Çoğunlukla erkek oyunculara dayalı ve takımda istisnasız herkesin uygulayabildiği bu aşırı agresif vurucu oyunu, kadın oyuncuların da desteğiyle kimi takımlar için ölümcül olabiliyor.

Türkiye kadrosunun en büyük problemi ise arayıcılarla ilgili gibi görünüyor. Takımda altı adet arayıcı bulunmasına rağmen, hiçbirinin yüksek seviyede bir snitch ile yakın seviye oyunlarda ciddi mücadele etmemiş olması göz korkutuyor.

Dört adet antrenman seansı ile 10 günlük kamp ardından turnuvaya hazır görünen Team Turkey, ilk maçında çok zorlu bir rakip olan İngiltere ile karşılaşacak. Rakip çok güçlü ve aşılması zor bir engel gibi görünüyor, ancak Türk takımı madalya istiyorsa böyle karşılaşmalara hazır olması gerektiğinin bilincinde.
