Quidditch Taking Off in South Korea

As of mid-September 2015, quidditch has arrived in South Korea. Given that there are other teams across Asia, it’s a wonder that the sport had not reached the South Korean shores sooner.

We would like to share with you what we have done so far, the potential Korea has, and the people behind Seoul Puffskeins, the first South Korean quidditch team.

Annie Lee, Tamar Godel, and I started the team, with lots of help from a few Korean friends. The one thing that the three of us have in common though, is that we learnt how to play quidditch outside South Korea.

Originally from South Korea, Annie Lee learnt how to play quidditch during her exchange program in Norway. Lee said she was bored out of her mind and decided to search the Internet for interesting things to do. This led to her stumbling upon the university team, NTNUI Rumpeldunk. It took her a while to get used to running around with a stick between her legs, but eventually she fell in love with the sport and its community. Lee’s commitment to quidditch grew even greater after her team placed fifth out of 32 at the 2015 European Quidditch Cup.

Tamar Godel started playing quidditch in July 2014 with the Philadelphia Honey Badgers, after watching the game for the first time in 2011 at a Harry Potter Weekend in Philadelphia, PA. Godel found out about the Honey Badgers after searching for a quidditch team to show the class she was teaching. She went to one of their practices, tried it out, and was instantly hooked.

I started playing quidditch because of its “Harry Potter” roots in May 2015 with the Frankfurt Mainticores in Frankfurt, Germany, and fell in love with it just five minutes after stepping onto the field. Over the next two months I took part in the Grie Soß Cup, European Games, and the League of Extraordinary Ghentlemen. I am currently in South Korea for a year, so I decided to start a team here - I couldn’t imagine going that long without playing quidditch!

We have been advertising a lot: hanging up posters, handing out flyers, setting up hoops on campus, and playing small exhibition games to show people that we are here. We managed to get 12 to 15 people to join our first few sessions, and 10 of them stuck around, even though quidditch was nothing like what they expected. Most of them came dressed in jeans and a pair of sneakers.  They enjoyed themselves, and soon asked if there were other Korean teams to play against, but unfortunately, we are still the only team for the time being.

It will be difficult to spread quidditch throughout Korea, as the people here prefer playing more common sports such as baseball or football. Keeping to the gender rule will also be tough, as it is uncommon here for women to exercise or join a sports club. Even the more established mixed-gender sports struggle with recruiting female players. Running around with sticks between our legs and tackling each other does not exactly make the sport that much more appealing to them. It is also hard to convince people that quidditch is an actual sport when we are the only team in the country. On the bright side, because we’re a community team, we have players from other universities who want to start their own teams as soon as they have enough experience and confidence.

As for the rulebook, a few Korean Harry Potter fans from an online community are working on translating it into Korean. This will definitely help us reach more of the locals.

A proper game or tournament would really get things going here in Korea, but as mentioned above, that will not be happening for a while. We would love to send a team to the World Cup in Frankfurt, but ideally we would like at least 14 players on our roster, we now have 10. That is what we are currently trying to aim for, and if it happens, I think more people will start to notice the game and get involved.

드디어!! 마침내!! 퀴디치가 한국에 상륙했어!!! 우리의 첫번째 연습은 작년 구월 중순쯤이었지. 오늘 우리 팀 뒷이야기(소근소근)와 여태껏 무엇을 해왔는지, 한국이 얼마나 많은 퀴디치 잠재력을 가지고 있는지 얘기를 나눠보려고해.

퀴디치는 한국에서 완전히 새로운 것이야. 비록 아시아에 다른 팀들이 있긴하지만 이 고립된 한국까지 미치지는 못했지-물론 우리가 팀을 만들기 전까지는 말이야. 외국에서 퀴디치를 배운 세명의 소녀들과(퀴디치 유학파라고 할까><) 다른 한국 친구들의 많은 도움으로 팀을 시작하게 되었어.

먼저 세 소녀들에들에 대한 얘기를 하자면, Annie Lee는 교환학생으로 노르웨이에 갔을 때 퀴디치를 알게 되었어. 어마무시한 지루함에 맞서서, 애니는 이색적인 스포츠를 찾아해매었고 운이 좋겠도 NTNUI Rumpeldunk라는 노르웨이 퀴디치 팀을 발견했지. 비록 몇 주간은 다리 사이의 막대기를 왜 끼워야하는가에 대한 의문과 어색함을 버리기 어려웠지만, 애니는 자신도 모르는 사이(마치 마법처럼!)퀴디치라는 스포츠와 사람들과 사랑에 빠지게되었어. <3<3 그리고 EQC(European Quidditch Cup으로 유럽의 32개 퀴디치 팀이 참가한 퀴디치 토너먼트야)에 참여하고 대회에서 5위를 한 이후 퀴디치에 대한 그녀의 애정은 커져만 갔지.

Tamar Godel은 2014년 7월에 Philadelphia Honeybadgers라는 팀에서 퀴디치를 하기 시작했어. 2011년 Chestnut Hill (PA)'s Harry Potter Weekend(:o)에서 처음 퀴디치를 본 이후에 말이지. 타마는 가르치는 일을 하고 있는데, 그녀의 반에 보여줄 팀을 찾는 와중에 Honeybadgers를 알게되었고, 팀 연습에 가서 직접 해본후, 바로 빠지게 되었지.

나, Patricia Heise는 해리포터 때문에 퀴디치를 시작하게 되었고 2015년 5월에 독일 프랑크푸르트에서 시작했어, 내가 이 스포츠에 빠지는데에는 5분이 걸리지 않았지 하핳 시작한 이후 두달 이내에 토너먼트들에(Grie Soß Cup, EGs, and Ghentlemen) 참가했었는데 그 이후에 한국에서 팀을 만드려는 시도는 해야겠다는 생각이 들었어. 1년동안 한국에 가게 되었는데 그동안 퀴디치를 하지 않으면서 지낼 수 는 없었거든!

우리는 학교 이곳저곳에서 홍보를 했었는데, 포스터를 붙이고, 홍보물을 나눠주고, 캠퍼스에 후프를 설치해서 사람들에게 퀴디치가 뭔지 보여주기 위해 작은 퍼포먼스 같은것도 했어. 그래서 우리는 우리 연습에 12명에서 15명 정도의 사람들을 구할 수 있었어. 비록 처음 퀴디치를 해본 사람들은 전혀 예상하지 못했지만(많은 사람들이 청바지와 컨버스를 신고 왔었지ㅋㅋ) 그중의 10명 정도는 남았어. 그들은 한국에 다른팀이 있냐고 물어보고 기본적인 규칙과 기술을 익힌 후에, 그들과 경기를 할 수 있을까 하는 것도 물어보았지. 연습때 대부분 10명 이상이 오기 때문에 같이 연습하고 게임하는 것 물론 재밌지만, 당연히 진짜 게임을 하는 것과는 다르지. 이런 그들의 열망을 뒤로한채 한국에 아직 다른 팀이 없다고 하는건 슬픈일이야ㅠ

한국에 퀴디치를 전파하는건 좀 어려울 수 있어, 한국사람들이 야구나 축구 같은 기존에 있는 더 보편적인 스포츠에 더 관심이 많기 때문이지. 젠더 규칙을 만족하기가 어려울수도 있지. 여기에서는 여자들이 운동을 하고 운동 동아리를 들어가는게 엄청 보편적이지는 않더라고. 좀 더 “평범한(정상적인?!)” 혼성 스포츠팀들도 여성 선수들을 구하기 어려운 상황에서, 다리 사이에 막대기를 끼고 돌아다니고 서로에게 태클을 거는 모습이 여자들에게 더 매력적으로 다가올지는 의문이 들어;; 또다른 어려운 점은 퀴디치팀이 우리나라에서 한 팀 밖에 없는 상황에서 사람들에게 퀴디치가 실제로 스포츠라는 것을 인식시키기 어렵다는거야. 그럼에도 불구하고 희망은 있어!!! 우리가 공동체 팀이기 때문에, 우리 팀에는 다른 대학교에 다니고 있고 퀴디치에 더 많은 경험과 자신감을 얻은 이후에 새로운 팀을 시작하고 싶어하는 팀원들도 있어!! 게다가, 3만명에 육박하는 해리포터 온라인 커뮤니티의 열정적인 지지자들이 있어. 그들은 퀴디치 규칙책을 한국어로 바꾸려는 목표를 갖고 있는데 이런 번역은 더 많은 사람들이 퀴디치를 알고 시도해보는데 도움이 될거야.

상대팀이 있어서 진짜 게임을 한다면 한국에 퀴디치가 더 불 붙을테지만, 유감스럽게도 조만간에는 힘들 것 같아. 그래서 우리는 World Cup에 가서 제대로된 경기를 하려는 목표를 가지고 있어. 하지만 참여하기 위해서는 10명 이상의 사람들이 있어야하지.(월드컵이 열리는 프랑크푸르트는 한국에서 멀고 많은 돈이 들어 ㅠ) 우리의 가까운 목표는 월드컵에 갈 수 있는 충분한 인원을 모으고 해외에서 열리는 국제적인 토너먼트에 많은 사람들의 관심을 모으는거야!
