Comments:

“I don’t understand these jerseys. The colors don’t work for me, and the design is very abstract.” This is my favorite quidditch logo possibly of all time. I love it a lot, design-wise. The jersey itself, though, I’m not a huge fan of. The color is perfect, though.”
I think this design is a good one; not a big fan of the colors, but they don't kill my eyes. I really do not understand why it has an electronic theme. The logo is well done, but I have no idea what it’s supposed to be...I cannot find the ‘team’ in it.”
"I’m not sure I understand the electronics theme. It’s kinda cool, but the overall look is weakened by an even harder to understand logo. Also, which jersey is theirs? There’s two designs uploaded. Saving grace: typeface.”

Wooster Scottish Nationals

Comments:

I hate like that big logo on front with, again, a big snitch on it, and the two things that are supposed to be brooms (I guess), look more like lacrosse sticks. I also don’t really get why the jersey is ripped on the back and don’t like the color of the Scottish pattern.
An uninspired logo, but I’m a fan of the tartan and the color scheme works for me, somehow. Not sure what’s going on on the back though.”
The claw cuts on the back are clever, but when combined with the shoulder, it makes the design confusing. If it’s just the cuts, then the design effect is: ‘The cuts are revealing a plaid shirt underneath/plaid body,’ but with the sleeve also colored, then you’re like – ‘The jersey apparently has no arm?’ Obviously I don’t mean in reality, I just mean that the effect is confusing design-wise.”
Aside from the clashing colors, these jerseys aren’t bad in person. The tartan is a great addition but shouldn’t be so overt. I don’t understand the claw marks, and the wordmark leaves a lot to be desired.”

inTENNsity
Comments:

Green and black? Because the team likes margaritas. Random capitalization of half of the name. A team based on a pun...I like the way they incorporated the state outline in the logo, but that’s all the positive things I can say.”
“I really don’t like the logo of the word ‘quidditch’ because it doesn’t seem to go with the rest of the design, but the font for the inTENNsity logo is awesome. Works very well. Overall, solid.”
“This is the kind of gradient that teams should be going for – it’s the way of the future. However, I can’t see the back or understand where that dumb snitch comes into play. Love the colors!”
“This jersey makes me think about a BMX or motocross jersey. I don’t like the font used for the front logo, but I like the fact that there is a number on the front.”

Gasteiz Gasmusins Quidditch

Comments:

“It looks like a bad superhero costume. The colors are far too bright, the top of the X cut off at a strange seam, the logo appears to be a snitch in the mouth of some sort of animal? But I have no idea what animal, and then the logo is repeated on the back extremely faintly. I’m not a fan at all.”
“I don’t like anything about this jersey. The red and purple really don’t fit together. And the logo is not original...I don’t want to see a big snitch on a logo anymore.”
“The colors are terrible. Like, clashing-ly bad terrible. I appreciate trying to include feminism in your jersey design, but the team went about it the wrong way. The snitch is bad, the jaws are bad, and I think the team could have spent more than five minutes on this.”
“I think this is one of the boldest choices, but the purple-red overlap really doesn’t work for me. I think the logoalthough tough to see is fine but unexciting. I like that the team worked to incorporate the culture into the jersey.”

Maraudeurs ICR Rennes

Comments:

“One of my favorites; the jersey well epitomizes the team with a very naval look. The colors and stripes are simple but work very well. I thought the crest could have been a bit more subtle though.”
“Solid design, but really not much else to say about it. Very bland.”
“I love this jersey! Simple but nice! I like the crest on the heart, which gives a little touch of color on it and makes a small nod to Harry Potter and the origin of this sport. Just missing something more ‘Maraudeurs’ to be perfect.”
“This is a finalist???????????????????????”

Crookshanks Lyon Quidditch
Comments:

“The colors here are way too bright and contrast each other too much for my taste. The cat looks like a lizard to me, and the snitch feels unnecessary.”
“There is nothing about this jersey that I like. The color split is weird, the cartoon cat is weird, the color choices in general are terrible....I hate this for many different reasons.”
“I like the kitty on front, but it doesn’t look professional. I hate the design of the jersey, which is way too simple. It looks like a 90s shirt.”
“This one too? The colors clash in a horrible way, and the cat on the broom is just embarrassing. I can’t look at it without turning away.”

Boise State Abraxans
Comments:

“The color and logo are really well done, I like the overlapping ‘B’ and horse. The curved font on the front of the jersey is a nice touch. I don’t really love the logo on the side of the jersey though.”
“This jersey is way too blue. I like the fact that it has a big logo on the side, but still missing something on this jersey, it looks too empty. Different shades of blue would maybe be a good idea...different blue for the sleeves for example. I also don’t like the number/name font.”
“This is a really successful design! The colors are representative of their school, and the logo is generic enough to fit in with the school’s mustang mascot. The only critique I have are the numbers and type are super bland, and the blue could be a deeper hue.”

Marquette University Quidditch
Comments:

“Really like the look of this, but taking off points because I’m not a huge fan of the piping and it seems that there are a bunch of different jerseys here. Still, solid branding and an overall good and classy look.”
“I’m not a big fan of when the back of a jersey is a different color than the front. I feel it cheapens the overall feel a bit. I also just don’t like how huge the number is on the front.”
“I like the collegiate style of this jersey and the fact that it has a big logo on the back, but I don’t like the side stripes and the fact that the back of the jersey is blue.”
“Marquette got it right a few years ago and have only had to make a few tweaks here and there. Bonus points for the full kit. The color palette is beautiful and used well on all the kit’s components.”

Norway Quidditch
Comments:

“That red is so bright. I like the use of fjords and the collar, but I feel like using other colors rather than red and white could have made this much better. The fjords also feel sloppily done.”
“I do not like the choice of collar and jersey model that looks too much like a table-tennis jersey. I like the design of the mountains, but I think another color would have been more appropriate.”
“Coloring is terrible. Mountains look good but would be better if they weren’t the same color as the background.”
“Even though Norges Rumpledunkforbund rejected my logo design (it was sweet), I think the vector mountains of this design are killing it. It creates a wonderful three-dimensional perception and reminds the viewer of Norway’s beautiful fjords in an edgy, athletic way. I really hope the red translates well in person and isn’t too light.”

Belgian Gryffins Quidditch

Comments:

“Still very strongly in favor of this. Very well balanced.”
“I love the jersey, but I am disappointed by the font of the name and number.”
“While I appreciate the asymmetrical design of the gryffin’s claw, I’m baffled as to how this won last year. The colors need to be reevaluated to better pop on the jersey, the details are sparse, the typeface is bland and unathletic, and the Hogwarts crest has to go.”
“Like the crest, like the colors, like the overall feel of the uniform. Slight markdown on the font and on the claw.”

Syracuse Snare

Comments:

“I love the vines and think this uniform works really well, but I think that they could have benefited from a more orange rather than a creamsicle-color base. I also think I would have abandoned the white altogether and the snitch logo as well.”
“There really isn’t much I like about this jersey. The colors are strange, the cursive font is strange with strange kerning, and the swirly designs don’t really belong on a jersey.”
“I hate the colors, and why did the team put so many arabesques on it? WHY? I really don’t like the orange with the green; that’s killing my eyes.”
“Just because sublimation allows you to print a full garment with incredible detail doesn’t mean you should. Its designers were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, that they didn’t stop to think if they should. See other failures in this respect...like Emerson College Quidditch last year.”

District of Columbia Quidditch Club

Comments:

This could have been a really successful jersey, but the hue choices took away from the dynamic effect the capitol building could have had. The symbols and design are great, but the typeface is way out of its element.”
“These jerseys could really only belong to one team. I wish they stayed more true to the DC flag with two even stripes – more white and less red would have been good, and the shadow capitol doesn’t do a lot for me. Still there’s something very DC about this, which I enjoy. Not a huge fan of the font.”
“Font choice is just terrible. Other than that, it’s solid but not special. Not much I can really vote down on, though. The more I look at it, the more I like it.”
“I really like this jersey, even if it is simple. I like the capitol on the front. We do not see it too much, and it’s brilliant! The stars are a nice nod to the American flag. I also love the small logo on the shoulder, simple and effective. I’m not a big fan of the font, but it goes well with the rest.”

Lunatica Quidditch Club

Comments:

“I love that wolf and the crest. I think the black and red overlap is a bit much for me and takes away from the jersey, as does the yellow outline on the names. If this jersey had one fewer color, I think it would be amazing.”
“I don’t really like the swoosh in the back under the name, and the placement of the number is strangely low. Crest is a bit busy and is indistinguishable from far away.”
“Lunatica had a great design, until I realized it’s a stock garment you can find on SanMar.com. The team incorporated its symbols onto it well, but it can’t take the credit for it from scratch. The wolf could be more sty
“This jersey lacks originality. It was taken on the basis of a pre-established model, and has not been fully created, which is unfortunate. And the front of the jersey is much prettier than the back of it.”
lized, too.”

BOUN Centaurs

Comments:

“The font and the overall design feel very amateurish to me, and not very sports-y. The logo is pretty good, but something is just...not there.”
“I like the sky texture used for the background, but I really hate that logo. I also would love to see a number on the front of the jersey because it looks a bit empty and I don’t like the Harry Potter font used for names and numbers.”
“I have literal disgust for the Boun Centaurs jerseys. Start with the overplayed night-sky gradient that, once again, runs amok with the ability to sublimate the rainbow, and add the really admirable but still falling short effort of a logo. Once we get past that, the back uses Harry Potter font. I don’t know what I dislike more, the purposeful use of that font in 2015, or the fact that almost 1,700 people liked this jersey. I don’t even want to give it a saving grace, but I really like the rugby collar.”
“The colors work for me, but the logo feels childish and the font is not a good fit to me. Also not a fan of the stars.”

Holyrood Hippogriffs
Comments:

“What is that logo? The red is too dark for my taste, and I don’t particularly understand what’s going on with the back of the jersey.”
“I don’t like anything about this jersey. Too many things are going on. It looks like every player asked to put something on it and the team couldn’t make a decision, so it put everything on the jersey.”
“The logo is quite busy, though it does help that it’s pretty symmetrical. The cuts on the back are strangely placed so I don’t like that.”
“Too much going on here for it to be an effective display for your team. Nice.”

QUT Lycans
Comments:

“I like the colors here, but the logo is lacking details and I don’t like the scratches going all down the side. Also, what’s up with the polka dots?”
“The black does not go with the grey/white/blue shades so I don’t like that. The yellow also is completely out of place. Every individual thing just feels thrown on top of each other rather than elements of a single design.”
“There are too many scratches on this jersey. Don’t like the way the team put the name under the number on the back. The Lycan head on the logo looks good, but the snitch is too big.”
“Pretty cool! A little more detail than needed, and the font is boring, but I like the mascot and symmetry of the design. ZEEN seems to know what it’s doing, but you don’t need ‘QUT Lycans’ on there twice or at all.”

New York Badassilisks

Comments:

“The snake feels a bit cartoonish to me, but I like the colors and think they work really well together as well as the texture of the design.”
“I like the logo, I like the sleeves design, but I really don’t like the green chosen.”
“Like Marquette, the Badassiliks found a good design early on and stuck with it. Their logo is one of the best, if not the best in the league, and it is incorporated well onto the garment.”
“It’s a solid design, but there’s just something about it that I don’t like. Not sure what it is.”

Green-Tauros Quidditch Torino

Comments:

“I just don’t get this one. The white/gray background really doesn’t appeal to me and the green bull is too bright as to not really be noticeable. I also don’t like how the uniform switches between two identities. Not a fan.”
“The coloring could use a bit more contrast and it’s a solid design, but not outstanding. I actually don’t like the split down the middle that much because it really does look like two unrelated jerseys put together.”
“Quidditch Torino definitely takes this one, as it has put thought into its palette and hired a professional designer. The contrast in shape and symbol is nice, and I think it’ll look really dynamic on the pitch.”
“I love the fact that this shirt is ‘cut’ into two parts, but I find that the side with the bull lacks something. On the other hand, I love the fact that there is an integrated snitch in the bull. I do not like that the bull looks like the Chicago Bulls’ logo.”

Brizzlepuffs Quidditch Club – Brizzlebees
Comments:

“Hate your name, love your jersey. Ditch the Hogwarts-esque crest.”
Not a big fan of the bee logo, but I really love the honeycombs on the side and the overall feel of the jersey.”
“The hive on the side is clever and pretty good. I’m confused about the hive in the middle of the shirt, though. Not sure why it is there or what it is because I can’t really see it. I also don’t like the stripes down the shoulder.”
“Like the logo, it’s well done! I like the hive cells on the sides, but there’s something missing on this jersey.…”

Polish National Team
Comments:

“Poland could have knocked it out of the park if its shade of gray contrasted with the white a lot better. I can’t wait to see these on-body.”
“Really like the color scheme and the white/off-white shadowing. I’m lukewarm on the hoops and not a huge fan of the eagle wings.”
“I think the jersey looks okay, but it is way too simple and too white. I don’t recognize Poland when looking at this jersey.”
“Really, the only thing I like about this is the hoops. Everything else is poorly colored and strangely placed.”

Team UK
Comments:

“I like the Union Jack and the hoops, but overall this doesn’t work for me. Just feels a bit too gimmicky and too quidditch-y. Subtlety would have gone a long way here, in my opinion.”
“I’m having a very hard time finding anything I don’t like about this jersey. It is brilliantly designed and I love it a lot. The hoops are backwards so I don’t like that? But it works for the design.”
“I really like the design of this jersey, but I have a problem with the colors, which are too bright. For me, they are not the right colors.”
“UK wins the prize for best hoop integration I’ve seen in a design yet. The colors are bright, but the overall just doesn’t cut it like Norway’s does.”

French Quidditch Federation
Comments:

“With all due respect to one of my co-judges who designed these, I’m simply not a fan. The sideways font confuses me, and the logo feels very abstract. I also deducted points since the shorts were not printed. These feel very French to me but not in a good way. Feels more suited for a museum than a pitch.”
“It just feels really well done. I love the creative placement of the name. It’s still readable and in an easy place to look for it without being traditional. Obviously it is left-heavy, but it’s really great.”
“France has a nice design, but I’ll always miss the cycling jersey style they had for the first Global Games. The arm patch is way too big, and maybe Lady Liberty could have been a focal point as the design.”
“The jersey looks really nice; I love the way the team put the flag on front, but it would be better with a logo...and I don’t like the French Federation crest, which looks like the American one.”

USC Dementors

Comments:

“A big fan of the coloring and the way the shadow works with the colors. I could do without the snitch cutout on the dementor though.”
“The logo could do without the snitch, but it’s a really good design. I like the color split in this one.”
“This jersey looks okay but looks too much like a soccer-style jersey, and I really don’t understand why it’s green. I don’t like that green. This jersey would have been way better in a shade of black and gray to look like a dementor. The dementor logo is cool even if I don’t like the snitch on it (once again)...”
“A strong jersey from a professional designer. Good solid color blocks, but too many details on the dementor to make it effective and reproducible.”

Leviathans Quidditch Liège

Comments:

“This is one of the jerseys that excited me the most. The logo is on par with what you’d see in AA or AAA baseball, which is far more than 99 percent of the league can say. Even though the lettering is a little haphazard, the action and detail of the leviathan is amazing. The texture and skyline fight the aesthetics of the overall look, but I’m still just blown away by the logo. The sleeve numbers are great, the crest is not!”
“Really like the two-toned greens and the dragon logo. The skyline does really well. Not sure about the underlying pattern and the snitch on the back, but those are very minor. Definitely one of my favorites.”
“Don’t really like the city or the swirls. I wouldn’t put that blue logo on the teal background. A bit strange.”

Vancouver Vipertooths

Comments:

“I like the dragon scale texture of the jersey but don’t like the grey triangle spine. I’m not a big fan of the dragon logo, which doesn’t look finished. Also, I don’t get why the dragon is green; the description talks about the vipertooth as a famous dragon in Harry Potter okay, but in Harry Potter its color is copper, which is definitely not green. So, why didn’t the team use that color? I’m a bit disappointed in this.”
“I really love the scales and the color here. The font is not generic, but fits really well. The dragon could have been a bit better but remains one of my favorites.”
“There’s something I instantly like about this design, but I’m not sure what it is. The words on the sleeve are strange and the logo is less than ideal. But overall, it is solid.”
“This is a great draft for what could be a great jersey. The logo needs a lot of work and the details are almost too much, but I appreciate the overall look and how they look on-body.”

The Fighting Farmers of America
Comments:

“I can’t even...I just literally can’t. I mean the font could be bigger and the logo is...something....I mean this whole thing is just something....I can’t believe that these are a thing. I personally love them, and I feel like you can’t have a middle reaction about them.”
“The thing I like least about this is the part that says ‘Fighting Farmers.’ It doesn’t fit great and could be better. Other than that, I’m a big fan.”
“I LOVE THIS JERSEY! It’s just great and super original! I love the idea of putting the flag on the pocket of the shorts, and the idea of the overalls is great to represent the team. Just one thing – it does not look like a sports jersey.”
“This is a hilarious design that I really appreciated when I first saw it. Upon closer inspection, however, it really could be a lot better. Modifying the tartan a little bit would help declutter the colors, and making ‘Fighting Farmers’ white like the names would help make things clearer. The details of the denim are fun, but in order to make it as realistic as it is detailed, the shading has to go. The logo is just a modification of Savage’s other art.”

  1. Where were these judges found? They obviously don't know much about graphics or design.... Reading the comments make me laugh. There were many good designs and original ideas like the syracuse and the norway jerseys. "I do not like the choice of collar and jersey model that looks too much like a table-tennis jersey.".... It's a rugby jersey... And most of the comments were unprofessional

  2. You guys just had a massive bitch-fest with this competition, you all clearly know jack-sh*t about design and tear down a lot of hard work probably put in by a lot of people - some of them I know to be professional designers. I'd like to see all the judges do a better job themselves. This competition was such a joke, it had so much potential but got completely ruined by the harsh and frankly rude comments.

    ReplyDelete
  3. I don't agree with the placing of jerseys. But that's just my personal opinion and my own bias shouldn't affect the criteria of a judging of competition.

It's a shame that the judges didn't have this view. Judges contradicted each other's statements. They down-voted jerseys because they just didn't like them, or because something was missing or wrong that they couldn't identify. Unless you can offer a suggestion for improvement, or specifically identify what is wrong, then you're just complaining for the sake of complaining. Judges should be offering constructive criticisms.

I've never been so ashamed to be a part of the quidditch community and considering this is one of the platforms by which we are presented to the rest of the world, I'm kind of ashamed to be a part of it. Don't make me feel ashamed like that.

The obviously bias judges slammed every jersey design that had a snitch (with the exception of New York and Torino), but hoops were okay. The snitch is a symbol of quidditch, possibly the most recognisable.

And whichever judge suggested that the French Jersey have the Statue of Liberty is (in my opinion) an elitist. Yes it was a gift from the French, but it's an AMERICAN landmark and icon. If you want to incorporate a FRENCH icon or landmark, why not the Eiffel Tower?

1 - Get unbias judges from different cultures within the International Quidditch Community.
    2 - Have a consistent judging criteria.

From, a very concerned quidditch player.

  4. Wow. A lot of snitch haters. And why be embarrassed by the sport's literary roots?
