Onward to Oxford: Milano Meneghins

As part of our efforts to preview all 32 teams competing in the European Quidditch Cup (EQC), the Quidditch Post is chatting with representatives from each team. Today we spoke with Michele Clabassi, captain of the Milano Meneghins.

Quidditch Post: The Milano Meneghins have one of the richest traditions in Europe and will be one of the few teams in attendance to be playing in their third EQC. Do you think the experience will help your team?
Michele: I can only hope it does! Past EQCs have really been the only high-level competition played by most of the team. Other tournaments with a comparable level have been the Italian tournament in May 2014, and the first Lunatica tournament in July 2013, facing Lunatica Quidditch Club and Paris Frog Quidditch as the strongest opponents respectively. Other than these, most of the games we played have been sparse, and with competition of similar level to us: the top team we faced are the Green-Tauros from Turin, who are quite evenly matched with us, with most if not all games ending in SWIM situations.

So the short answer is maybe. But I feel like many teams with a shorter life may have much more actual experience than we do.
QP: Last year, finishing at the bottom of the group must have been a bit disappointing. Do you think that will have any impact on the way the team approaches EQC?
Michele: It surely was. I do think more than half the team was at its first tournament then and we still managed to beat Lunatica out of snitch range, and they then proceeded up to fourth place. And I dare say we did a decent job on Day Two last year, fighting up to the seventh spot in that final loss against the Belgian Beerters (slash Deurne Dodo Quidditch Team).

But I really think last year's experience is the least of our worries going toward this year's EQC. When you reach the bottom, the only way left is up, right?

QP: What will you need to do to have a better result this time around?
Michele: One thing we not only can, but simply need to do, is get a couple more players to EQC. Last year we had a 14-player strong team if I remember correctly, even if our physical form was... questionable. This year we are currently at seven players, with a couple maybes in the waiting list.

We also need to make a good use of these couple of months: get back in shape, increase teamwork, work on fundamentals... all things we started to do this season, but the last months have been a bit of an issue, with practises being rare and often not effective.
On the plus side, we have a player who has been practicing with the London Unspeakables, so I hope she can bring a lot of that experience to the Meneghins. Both she and I have played at Valentine's Cup II, and I have brought home a few things from all of my teammates in "Gorik or die tryin'" (my bad, Gorik died tryin').

I don't really know what to expect: it could be our worst run at EQC so far, but our team has shown its best moments under pressure; if we work hard in the time we have left, who knows, it may be our best.

QP: Who are some of the team's key players?
Michele: Francesco Ermini has been so far an essential presence in the team. He is the only one who has all the qualities needed of a keeper and the stamina to be on the field for an entire tournament if necessary.

Nicola Beverari, the only male pure beater in our roster so far for this EQC, is one of the best players in the team for speed and physical power. In games where he makes the right plays at the right time, he can be a game changer. At the last EQC, I have been told by a few people, he was amazing in a couple games. The next step he needs to make is being more consistent and become a player capable of organizing the team on defence.

I have to add that it's hard to say a couple names and not feel the need to mention other players, too. I have seen more than one of my teammates rise up to the occasion and become crucial for a win, but these are perhaps the two names who have done it more consistently in recent times from my point of view on the field (I usually don't get to watch much of the game from the sidelines!).
QP: Does the team have a particular goal for this EQC?
Michele: We currently have our smallest roster at EQC so far, with only seven players that are already sure they can be there. I think our realistic goal will be being able to play an entire tournament with a limited roster (a feat that Lunatica managed to pull off brilliantly last year), and make it to the upper half of the final standings. If we face any of the other two Italian teams, we'd like to do our best to, at the very least, keep it within snitch range, and do our best to win any game that way.

Ultimately, my personal goal is going back to Italy with a team where any player could potentially step up as on-field captain if necessary. I would like the players to learn how to: organize the team, call plays, communicate with teammates, know when to make a play and when not to make it.
As utopian as that last one is, having a small team means everyone will get much more playing time than usual, so I hope that brings the right kind of experience.

QP: Is there a particular team you hope to face?
Michele: As a team, none that I can think of. Individual players have teams they have never played against that they would like to face, or friends in other teams. (Obligatory shoutout to everyone Gorik or Die Tryin', the best team in a fantasy tournament ever, but I would not love meeting some of them on the field. Because there is some crazy talent in there!)

QP: What would you say is the team's biggest strength?
Michele: Giving it all we've got even when facing stronger teams, being tired from previous games, and with having  just one or two subs available.

QP: Thanks for your time.

Michele: Come squadra, non me ne viene in mente nessuna.
