Quidditch Day 2016 was held on Sunday, June 12 in Palermo, a neighborhood of the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires, on a morning that brought sunny but chilly conditions. At 9 a.m., the players joined together after choosing a firm expanse of field in order to assemble the pitch.

While they prepared the equipment, the area became filled with the cameras, tripods, and microphones of a group of students from the University of Buenos Aires that had come to create a documentary about the sport, taking pictures of the pitch as some of the players warmed up to play.

Once the field was prepared, a raffle began among the players of the three teams that had signed up, and it was decided that the first match would be between the Scarlet Fireball (SF) and Cumulus Nimbus (CN). Despite the cold weather, both teams began to warm up and prepare for their first match.

The documentary makers recorded Cumulus Nimbus’ strategy pep talk, in which all the players expressed their support for and confidence in the team. Once the rules were clarified, the teams posed facing one another with the refs in the middle for a picture. After the captains shook hands, the coin toss favored Cumulus, and they chose their side of the pitch. Everyone ― players, referees, and documentarians ― took their places.

The second whistle began the inaugural game, in which CN presented a complete team with substitutes, while the SF had no more than five players during the whole game. Cumulus Nimbus and Scarlet Fireball counted on two players who alternated their positions of chasers, beaters, and keepers with their teammates. During the first part, the constant back and forth to the hoops sometimes resulted in goals, and other times in rapid counterattacks from the other team.

Scarlet Fireball was ahead when the snitch was released. Matías Puszczyk (SF) and Nicolás Fernández (CN) abandoned their primary positions and, donning yellow headbands, began to chase a very agile and quick snitch. After some minutes and frustrating attempts, Scarlet Fireball’s seeker caught the snitch, ending the game and securing the win for their team with a final score of 150*-80. The players greeted one another cordially and happily in a show of sportsmanship afterwards.

Given the triangular rotation of play, the second game was between Excalibur (EX) and Cumulus Nimbus; thus the two teams prepared for the next match at the call of the referee. Newly clarifying the rules, the players of each team positioned themselves face-to-face for the photographers and later familiarized themselves with the height of the hoops.

At the second whistle, CN again presented their complete team with substitutes against Excalibur, which had four female players and a sole male player. Although they had the upper hand in numbers, Cumulus Nimbus were still tired from their first match.

Excalibur skillfully took bludger control and the larger field of play, and thanks to the rapid counter attacks of Juan Pablo Freire, CN struggled to claim a conclusive lead before the release of the snitch runner. Goals continued to be scored as Freire and Lucas Szykula of Cumulus Nimbus raced to capture the snitch. This time, the skillful maneuvering of the Cumulus Nimbus seeker paid off and his team secured a victorious final score of 100*-40.

After this game, some players sat down to eat lunch and others began to prepare themselves for the following match. However, because some Excalibur players either could no longer play due to physical injuries or questioned the weather, the team’s captains decided not to play against the Scarlet Fireball. Due to this, they withdrew from the game and conceded victory to SF with a score of 70*-0.

With this result, the Scarlet Fireball rose to the top of the podium, followed by Cumulus Nimbus and Excalibur. While the players relaxed or finished lunch, the captains and coaches voted on MVPs for Quidditch Day:

Best Beater: Lucila Atamaniuk (SF)

Best Seeker: Matías Puszczyk (SF)

Best Player: Juan Pablo Freire (EX)

Best Keepers: Martin Gonzalez (CN) y Pablo Rocchi (SF)

Fair Play: Excalibur

The leadership committee then commenced a meeting in the middle in order to discuss some pressing issues, while Astrid Lucchino, the official photographer for the event, completed a photoshoot with each of the present players. Finally, the players combined to form two teams, the blue team and the red team, and faced each other amiably. The game was played without a snitch and only lasted 20 minutes, with a change of field at the 10-minute mark, after which the blue team was declared the winner.

El domingo 12 de Junio amaneció soleado y fresco en la zona de Palermo (Capital Federal), ideal para que se realizarán los partidos correspondientes al Quidditch Day. A las 9 de la mañana comenzaron a juntarse distintos jugadores que, tras elegir un espacio de terreno firme, se pusieron a armar la cancha.

Mientras se preparaban los elementos para jugar, el lugar se llenó de cámaras, trípodes y micrófonos de un grupo de estudiantes de la UBA que vinieron a realizar un documental sobre nuestro deporte, para el cual hicieron tomas del armado de cancha, y de algunos jugadores preparándose para jugar los partidos del dia.

Una vez que la cancha estuvo preparada, se realizó un sorteo entre jugadores de los tres equipos que se habían anotado y quedó definido que el primer partido se disputará entre los Scarlet Fireball (SF) y los Cumulus Nimbus (CN) por lo que ambos equipos fueron a prepararse y a hacer la entrada en calor.

Los documentalistas grabaron la charla técnica de los Cumulus Nimbus en la cual todos los jugadores expresaron su apoyo y confianza al equipo. Aclaradas las reglas, ambos equipos se dispusieron frente a frente con los árbitros en el medio para tomarse la foto. Luego del saludo entre los capitanes, el sorteo favoreció a los Cumulus que eligieron el lado de la cancha y todos se dispusieron a ocupar sus lugares: los jugadores, los árbitros y los documentalistas.

El segundo pitido dio comienzo al partido inaugural en el cual los CN presentaron una formación completa con suplentes mientras que los SF no fueron más de cinco jugadores durante todo el juego. Los CN y los SF contaron con dos jugadoras que fueron alternando sus posiciones de cazadoras, golpeadoras y guardianas con sus compañeros. Durante la primera parte, las constantes llegadas a los aros a veces se traducían en goles y otras veces, no pero siempre había una rápida respuesta por parte del otro equipo.

La Snitch fue liberada cuando los Scarlet Fireball llevaban algunos goles de ventaja. Matías Puszczyk(SF) y Nicolás Fernandez(CN) dejaron de lado los roles que tenían en la cancha y poniéndose la banda amarilla se lanzaron a la persecución de una snitch muy ágil y veloz. Tras varios minutos e intentos frustrados, el buscador de los SF atrapó la snitch dando por terminado el partido y obteniendo la victoria por 150*-80. Entonces, los jugadores se saludaron con cordialidad y felicitándose mutuamente.

Dado el esquema triangular, el segundo partido tenía que disputarse entre los Excalibur (EX) y los Cumulus Nimbus, así que los dos equipos se dispusieron a entrar en calor  hasta el llamado del árbitro. Nuevamente aclaradas las reglas, los jugadores de cada equipo se posicionaron frente a frente para ser fotografiados y luego se ubicaron a la altura de los aros.

Al segundo pitido, los CN vuelven a presentar un equipo completo con sustitutos frente a los Excalibur, que contaba con cuatro jugadoras y un único jugador masculino. A pesar de la diferencia numérica, los Cumulus Nimbus cargaban con el desgaste físico del primer encuentro.

Debido a que los Excalibur tuvieron la posesión de las dos bludgers la mayor parte del tiempo y a los rápidos contraataques de Juan Pablo Freire, les fue más difícil a los CN tener una diferencia de gol favorable antes de que se libere al snitch runner. Otros goles fueron marcados mientras Lucas Szykula (CN) y Juan Pablo Freire (EX) intentaban capturar la Snitch. En esta ocasión, la maniobra ágil del buscador de los Cumulus Nimbus culminó el partido otorgándoles la victoria por 100*- 40.

Después de este encuentro algunos jugadores se sentaron a almorzar y otros, a prepararse para el siguiente partido. Sin embargo, debido a que algunos jugadores de los Excalibur no podían jugar por molestias físicas o cuestiones de tiempo, las capitanas de este equipo decidieron no presentarse al partido contra los Scarlet Fireball. Debido a esto, se les concedió la victoria a los Scarlet con un puntaje de 70*-0.

Con este resultado, los Scarlet accedieron a la cima del podio, seguidos por los Cumulus Nimbus y los Excalibur. Mientras los jugadores se relajaban o almorzaban, los capitanes y coaches votaron las menciones del Quidditch Day:

La comisión directiva realizó una reunión en pleno para tratar varios proyectos a futuro mientras Astrid Lucchino, la fotógrafa oficial, realizaba una sesión de fotos con cada uno de los jugadores presentes. A modo de cierre, los jugadores se mezclaron para formar dos equipos, el azul y el rojo, que se enfrentarían en un amistoso. El partido se jugó sin snitch y a veinte minutos, con un cambio de cancha a los diez minutos, tras los cuales el equipo azul se consagró ganador.
