World Cup 2016: Spotlight on South Korea | 2016 월드컵: 한국 퀴디치 팀 집중 조명

When Team Korea plays its first match at World Cup 2016 in Frankfurt, Germany in July, the team will still be less than a year old. It is no doubt that the Koreans will be facing a terribly uphill battle, with only seven players on their roster. But as part of the first team from Asia to compete at World Cup, the players will be looking to gain experience from playing against some of the finest quidditch players in the world.

History

Quidditch in Korea was started by Annie Lee, Tamar Godel, and Patricia Heise in Sept. 2015. All three of them have experience playing quidditch outside of Korea. Annie Lee is originally from Korea, but started playing in Norway with NTNUI Rumpeldunk during her exchange program, while Tamar Godel and Patricia Heise played back in their home countries for the Philadelphia Honey Badgers and Frankfurt Mainticores, respectively.

Being the only team in Korea means they have no experience playing against anybody else. The closest team to them is the Hanoi Draco Dormiens in Vietnam, which is six hours by plane. However, Heise is optimistic about their progress over the past few months and is looking forward to seeing how the team performs at World Cup.

The Squad

As one of the newest emerging areas, Korea understandably had a very small pool of players to choose from to represent the country.

“We took anyone who could afford to go and is eligible,” Heise said. “Jonathan Hong and Kyle Jeon are experienced and skilled players from the US and we’re really glad that they chose to play for Korea.” 

In terms of organising the team for World Cup, the responsibilities are shared between Sangbeom Kim, Annie Lee, and Patricia Heise. Kim and Heise take turns coaching the team. Kim also helps Lee with the team’s fundraising.

Due to the team having only seven players, positions are not set in stone, as the team will have to make do with only one substitute until the snitch comes on pitch. 

Interview with Coach Patricia Heise

Patricia Heise has competed with Germany at last year’s European Games, which makes her a perfect fit as Korea’s coach. During her exchange program in Korea, she helped co-found the Korean team and will be playing for Korea at the upcoming World Cup.

Quidditch Post: What are your expectations for the Korean team at World Cup?

Patricia Heise: It’s insane to go to World Cup with only seven players. We don’t think we will make the group stage or even possibly win any games; however, this is one of the best chances to get out there and play with other teams, and we didn’t want to miss this opportunity. We’ve already agreed among each other that we’re going to World Cup to gain experience and have fun, even if it means getting beat in the face by a world-class beater. With that being said, I want the players to leave Germany feeling proud about what they’ve achieved and with even more drive to compete again at the next World Cup.

QP: Being the first Asian team at World Cup, what are your hopes for the rest of Asia in upcoming major international tournaments?

PH: I’d love to see Asian quidditch get more attention in its own continent and also internationally. By getting a team of seven players to World Cup, I want to show the quidditch world the potential that this continent has. I’m also really glad that Malaysia’s hosting the first Asian Quidditch Cup just a week after World Cup. Quidditch needs a lot more exposure in Asia, and this is one of the ways to do it. I’d also love to see the World Cup be hosted in Asia one day!

QP: How is the Korean team feeling about playing at World Cup?

PH: The general feeling is that of excitement. They really just want to get out there and give it their best shot. Sangbeom Kim expressed his concerns about bringing a small team, but he’s looking to learn from the best while he’s there. Jake An and Jonathan Hong shared similar points to Kim, but they also want to make new friends and connections with the other quidditch players and do some traveling while they’re there.

Analysis

Korea is going into the tournament as ultimate underdogs. With possibly the smallest team in the tournament, fatigue will start to creep in after the first few games. Heise mentioned that the team has not played a proper game in or outside of Korea, so the expo will give the Koreans a good understanding where pitch size and referee calls are concerned.

Korea has been drawn into the same group as the United Kingdom, Turkey, Spain, and Austria. If the chasers execute more passes and fewer drives, they will be able to preserve enough energy to at least last the whole first day of the tournament.

Whether or not Korea wins a few games or loses all of its matches, the team will head back to Asia with an invaluable amount of experience. With a much stronger foundation, the Korean team will almost definitely be back at the next World Cup with more players and a chance at entering the group stages.

한국의 퀴디치 역사는 1년도 채 되지 않는다. 그리고 이번 IQA 월드컵에 출전하는 한국 팀은 7명의 선수만을 로스터에 올려놓고 있다. 그렇기 때문에 그들은 아주 힘든 싸움을 벌여야 할 것이다. 하지만 IQA 월드컵에 출전하는 첫번째 아시아 팀으로써, 한국 팀의 선수들은 세계 최고의 선수들과의 경기경험을 얻으려 한다.

역사

한국의 첫 번째 퀴디치 팀의 ‘창립자’ 라고 할 만한 사람은 세 명이다. Annie Lee, Tamar Godel 그리고Patricia Heise 가 그들이다. 이 세 명은 모두 한국 바깥에서 퀴디치를 접했다. Annie Lee는 한국인이지만 노르웨이에서의 교환학생 기간에 퀴디치를 시작했고, Patricia Heise와 Tamar Godel은 각각 그들의 모국인 독일과 미국에서 퀴디치를 경험했다. 그리고 그들은 한국에서 만나 2015년9월부터 팀을 만들어 왔다.

한국의 유일한 팀이었기 때문에 한국 팀은 모여서 정식 경기를 가져본 적이 없다. 가장 가까운 팀은 베트남에 있는데(Hanoi Draco Dormiens), 이마저도 비행기로 6시간이 걸리는 거리이다. 그러나Heise는 지난 몇 달간의 발전을 긍정적으로 생각하고 있으며, 월드컵에서 팀이 어떤 활약을 보일지 기대하고 있다.

선수단

퀴디치의 발길이 새롭게 닿은 지역이기 때문에, 한국 팀은 아직 대표팀 구성에 필요한 선수가 부족할 수밖에 없었다. Patricia Heise는 이렇게 말한다.

“우리는 월드컵에 갈 수 있고, 자격요건에 맞는 사람이면 누구든지 팀에 넣었어요. Jonathan Hong과Kyle Jeon과 같은 미국에서 많은 경험과 실력을 쌓은 선수들이 한국 팀을 선택했다는 것은 아주 좋은 소식이었죠.”

코치 Patricia Heise와의 인터뷰

Patricia Heise는 작년의 유럽 대회에서 독일 대표팀으로 참가했다. Patricia Heise는 한국 팀의 공동 창립자 중 한 명이고, 이번 월드컵에 한국팀의 일원으로 참가한다.

Quidditch Post(이하 QP): 이번 월드컵에서 한국 팀에게 거는 기대는 무엇인가?

Patricia Heise(이하 PH): 일곱명이 월드컵에 가는 건 미친 짓일 거예요. 우리는 아마도 group stage를 넘어가지 못할 것이고, 한 경기도 이기지 못할지도 모르겠습니다. 하지만 월드컵에서 다른 팀들과 경기하는 것은 놓치고 싶지 않은 엄청난 기회죠. 우리는 모두 우리를 자라게 할 경험을 위해 월드컵에 출전한다는 것을 알고 있어요. 그 경험이 비록 처참한 실패이더라도 말이죠. 이번 대회가 끝나고 나서 선수들이 그들의 성취에 자랑스러워하고 다음 월드컵에 대한 동기부여를 받았으면 합니다.

QP: 월드컵에 출전하는 첫 번째 아시아 팀으로써 아시아 퀴디치에 바라는 점은?

PH: 아시아의 퀴디치에는 아시아 대륙 내에서의 관심뿐만 아니라, 국제적 관심 또한 필요하다고 생각합니다. 우리 팀은 월드컵에서 아시아의 퀴디치가 어떠한 잠재력이 있는지 월드컵에서 보여줄 수 있으면 좋겠네요. 또 월드컵이 열리고 바로 일주일 후에 말레이시아에서 첫 Asian Quidditch Cup이 열리는데, 이러한 대회와 같은 대중들에게 퀴디치가 노출되는 기회가 아시아 내에서도 많아져야 한다고 생각합니다. 그러면 언젠가 아시아에서 월드컵이 열리는 것도 기대할 수 있지 않을까요?

QP: 월드컵을 앞둔 한국 팀 선수들의 느낌은 어떤지?

PH: 모두들 최선을 다하려고 합니다. 비록 작은 팀이라서 힘든 경기를 치르겠지만, 월드컵에서 많은 것을 배우고 가길 바라고 있어요. 또한, 월드컵에서 만날 다른 퀴디치 선수들과의 만남도 기대하고 있었습니다.

분석

대한민국 팀은 최약체로 대회에 참가하게 될 것이다. 7명만의 선수를 가지고 경기를 치르기 때문에, 처음 몇 경기 이후부터 피로 문제가 시작될 것이다. Heise는 한국 팀이 아직 외국에서 제대로 된 경기를 치러본 적이 없다고 이야기했다. 따라서 향후 상대가 결정될 expo game은 한국 팀에게 경기장과 심판 판정에 대한 중요한 기준점이 될 것이다. 한국은 영국, 터키, 스페인, 오스트리아와 한 조에 들어가게 되었다. chaser들이 돌파보다는 패스 위주의 플레이를 한다면 그들은 대회 첫날이 끝날 때까지 쓸 힘을 비축할 수 있을 것이다. 몇 경기에서 이기든, 아니면 모든 경기를 지든, 한국 팀은 어디에서도 가질 수 없는 경험을 얻을 것이다. 이런 경험을 가지고 한국 팀은 다음 월드컵에 더 많은 선수와 더 탄탄한 기반을 가지고 준비한 모습으로 나타날 것이다.
