El domingo 6 y lunes 7 de Diciembre del 2015 se jugó la primera edición de la Copa del Sur, primer torneo internacional de Quidditch en Sudamérica. La sede elegida para este torneo, pionero en el Quidditch sudamericano, fue Buenos Aires, Argentina. En este participaron en total 7 equipos: 6 de Argentina y 1 de Chile. El formato del torneo fue de una liguilla “todos contra todos” y una final disputada por los 2 equipos mejores posicionados en la anterior. La jornada de dos días transcurrió a cielo abierto en el Parque Polideportivo Julio A. Roca, bajo el flamante sol porteño.

El primer partido se disputó, luego de un breve discurso del director de la Asociación Argentina de Quidditch Matías Puszcyk, entre los dos mejores equipos de Argentina: Black Birds (Buenos Aires) y Scarlet Fireball (Berazategui, Provincia de Buenos Aires). Ambos equipos demostraron una gran destreza en la cancha, así como un gran juego en equipo. El partido estuvo parejo en todo momento, ningún equipo sacaba mucha ventaja sobre el otro. Cuando el snitch runner entró al campo, el partido iba 70 - 60 a favor de los Black Birds, atrapando estos últimos la Snitch, ganando el partido 100*- 60.
La jornada continuó con la victoria 120* a 60 de los experimentados Cumulus Nimbus (Buenos Aires) por sobre los novatos Night Owls (Buenos Aires). Las flaquezas, el cansancio (la plantilla de estos últimos estaba conformada por 7 jugadores, impidiendo que puedan hacer cambios) y la poca experiencia de los Night Owls fueron aprovechadas por los Cumulus Nimbus, que lograron ganarles por amplia diferencia.
El tercer partido fue entre los debutantes Deathly Dragons (Rosario, Argentina) y los Vengadores de Hogwarts (Buenos Aires).Ya que este era el primer partido que jugaban desde que se formaron los Dragons, se notó en el campo con la falta de estrategia, tanto en ataque como en defensa, y fueron fácilmente abatidos por los Vengadores, culminando en un 130*-30 a favor de los porteños.
A continuación siguió un partido histórico: el primer enfrentamiento de Quidditch entre dos equipos de distintos países en Sudamérica. Luego de la derrota contra los Black Birds, los Scarlet Fireball ponían a prueba a los visitantes los Santiago Snidgets (Santiago, Chile) en un partido lleno de sorpresas. A pesar de las flaquezas obvias debido a la poca experiencia, los Sindgets demostraron poder y fuerza frente a uno de los mejores equipos Argentinos, terminando con un ajustado 70*-110 con la victoria del equipo bonaerense.
La jornada continuó con la victoria 120* a 60 de los experimentados Cumulus Nimbus (Buenos Aires) por sobre los novatos Night Owls (Buenos Aires). Ya habiendo pasado la primera ronda, con todos los equipos habiendo jugado al menos 1 partido, la segunda ronda llegó con muchas sorpresas. Los Black Birds aplastaron a los Night Owls con un 170* a 10; Contra todo pronóstico, los Vengadores de Hogwarts le ganaron por los 30 puntos de la snitch a los Cumulus Nimbus 120*-90; y, en un “duelo de novatos”, los Deathly Dragons, a pesar de una gran mejora respecto a su anterior partido, no pudieron contra la agresividad de los Santiago Snidgets, que les ganaron 110*-40.

En la tercer ronda, la última del día 1, los partidos transcurrieron sin muchas sorpresas: los Scarlet Fireball superaron 130*-10 a los Night Owls; los Black Birds derrotaron a los Cumulus Nimbus 150-70*, a pesar de que la snitch fue para estos últimos; en un partido emocionante, los Vengadores de Hogwarts derrotaron a los Santiago Snidgets 150*-90 y, cerrando el primer día de competencia, los Scarlet Fireball le ganaban 200-70* a los Deathly Dragons, quienes al menos tuvieron una alegría con su primer snitch atrapada.
El primer día de la copa finalizó con los Black Birds junto con los Vengadores de Hogwarts en la punta, ambos con 3 partidos ganados y 0 perdidos; seguidos de los Scarlet Fireball que, al haber jugado un partido más que los demás, contaban con 3 ganados y 1 perdido. En el tercer lugar, momentáneamente, quedaban empatados los Santiago Snidgets y los Cumulus Nimbus, ambos con 1 partido ganado y 2 perdidos y, al final de la tabla, con 0 partidos ganados y 3 perdidos, los Deathly Dragons y los Night Owls. Ya parecía bastante claro quienes podían llegar a pasar a la final, pero aún quedaban 11 partidos más por jugarse y nada era totalmente seguro.
El segundo día de la Copa del Sur comenzó con el esperado duelo entre los dos punteros: Los Vengadores de Hogwarts y los Black Birds, en el que los Black pudieron marcar territorio y crear una ventaja de 70 puntos cuando salió la snitch. Ésta fue atrapada por el buscador de los Vengadores, y el partido finalizó 100-60* a favor de los Black Birds.
El siguiente partido iba a ser jugado por los Deathly Dragons y los Night Owls, pero estos últimos lamentablemente debieron retirarse de la competencia por falta de jugadores, a causa de 2 bajas en su acortado plantel. Por lo tanto, según el reglamento oficial, el partido se les dio por ganado a los Deathly Dragons 70*-0. Esta resolución también se tomó para los Vengadores de Hogwarts y los Santiago Snidgets, ya que ellos tambien tenian un partido programado contra los Night Owls ese día.
El segundo partido se jugó entre los Cumulus Nimbus y los Santiago Snidgets. Estos últimos sorprendieron no solo a los Cumulus, sino a todos los equipos, y demostraron que son un rival temible y a tener mucho en cuenta en el futuro. El partido terminó 130*-50 a favor de los chilenos.
La jornada continuó con una victoria predecible de los Black Birds por sobre los Deathly Dragons 150-50* (segunda snitch atrapada por los rosarinos en la copa), la bastante ajustada victoria de los Scarlet Fireball frente a los Cumulus Nimbus 80-60* y el duelo entre los Black Birds y los Santiago Snidgets que terminó 110-70* a favor de los porteños, logrando así la clasificación a la final.
El siguiente partido era uno de los más importantes de la primera fase del torneo porque se enfrentaban los Scarlet Fireball y los Vengadores de Hogwarts, ambos con 4 partidos ganados y 1 perdido, siendo este el partido de desempate y clasificador a la final. Por desgracia para los Vengadores, estos no fueron rival para los Scarlet, quienes los vencieron 140-70* y dejaron la final armada.
Finalmente, para completar la primera fase del torneo, se enfrentaron los Cumulus Nimbus y los Deathly Dragons, ganando los primeros 80-70* y dejando camino al partido más importante y el que decidiría quién se iba a casa con el premio: la gran final.
La final entre los Black Birds y los Scarlet Fireball fue el partido más parejo del torneo: ninguno de los equipos logró sacar demasiada sobre el otro y casi siempre el equipo que iba perdiendo lograba empatar y superar al otro y así sucesivamente. El partido ponía los nervios de punta a cualquiera que estuviera mirando, porque nadie llevaba una clara delantera. Mientras el juego se ponía cada vez más interesante, cada vez faltaba menos para la snitch y, en esos últimos minutos, los Black Birds sacaron una ventaja de 40 puntos. Si los porteños atrapaban la snitch, ganaban el partido. La euforia y los nervios se acrecentaron cuando la snitch de los Vengadores de Hogwarts, Santiago Contarino, entró a la cancha. Los Scarlet necesitaban revertir el resultado cuanto antes, y los Black Birds, sacarles aún más ventaja. Entonces, suena el silbato del árbitro de snitch. Todas las miradas van a Nicolas Camera, buscador de los Scarlet que, sostiene la snitch en sus manos. El partido está empatado. Por primera vez en la historia del Quidditch argentino, un partido va a tiempo suplementario, y nada más y nada menos que la final de la Copa del Sur.
Se le dan 5 minutos a los equipos y a la snitch para descansar y discutir la táctica. Pasado ese tiempo, los equipos vuelven a posicionarse en la cancha y retoman el partido.

Ya va 1 minuto de juego, los Black Birds van 1 punto arriba, pero las miradas están atentas en el juego de los buscadores: Brandon Maidana de los Black Birds mano a mano con Nicolás Camera de los Scarlet Fireball tratando de atrapar la Snitch. Luego, a Maidana lo queman y Camera queda solo con la snitch, comienza a correr a través del campo para alejarse del buscador. Camera lo alcanza, y contarino trata de girarse para evitar un agarre... y luego suena el silbato. El juego se paraliza y todos miran atónitos a Camera, con la media amarilla en su mano que logró atrapar antes de que Contarino se pueda girar. La árbitro Rocío Martino se pone el silbato en la boca y hace las clásicas señales al son del silbato, indicando el final del partido y definiendo la Copa del Sur: Los Scarlet Fireball son campeones de Sudamérica.
Todos los jugadores de los Scarlets dejan todo y salen corriendo a abrazar a Nicolás Camera y celebrar una merecida victoria, mientras los Black Birds se abrazan y corean al unísono su grito de guerra en medio de la tristeza.
Al terminar el momento privado de cada equipo, ambos finalistas se saludan y se abrazan. Después de todo, muchos de ellos son grandes amigos entre si.
Los directivos de la AAQ llaman a todos los equipos a hacer una ronda. Los equipos se mezclan en la ronda y ríen y bromean juntos. The event was played Round Robin style with a matchup between the two teams with the highest seeding as the final game. The two-day tournament was played outdoors in the blazing sun at the Sports Center Julio A. Roca.
After a brief speech by the General Director of the Argentina Quidditch Association (AAQ), Matías Puszczyk, the tournament began. The first game featured the two best teams in the country: the Black Birds (Buenos Aires) and Scarlet Fireball (Buenos Aires). Both teams played a good and cohesive game. The score was tied for the majority of the game, but when the snitch entered the pitch, the Black Birds were winning 70-60. Briefly after that, The Black Birds ultimately caught the snitch, winning the game 100*-60.
The tournament continued, with Cumulus Nimbus (Buenos Aires) defeating newcomers, the Night Owls (Buenos Aires), with a score of 120*-60. The Night Owls’ weak strategies, fatigue – an expected problem with only seven players and no substitutions available – and lack of experience were taken advantage of by the Cumulus Nimbus, who won by double their opponent’s score

After the first round, in which all of the teams had played at least one game, the second round brought a lot of surprises. The Black Birds crushed the Night Owls with a final score of 170* - 10. Against all expectations, Los Vengadores de Hogwarts beat Cumulus Nimbus by a snitch catch, 120*-90. In the rookie face-off, the Deathly Dragons Rosario, even while playing better than in their previous game, lost to the aggressive Santiago Snidgets 110*-40.

The third and final round of the day held few surprises, as Scarlet Fireball won 130*-10 over the Night Owls, and the Black Birds beat Cumulus Nimbus 150-70*. In an exciting game, Los Vengadores de Hogwarts defeated the Santiago Snidgets with a final score of 150*-90. The last game of the day was between Scarlet Fireball and the Deathly Dragons Rosario; the latter losing 200-70*, but catching the snitch – the team’s first grab in their short history.
The first day of the tournament ended with the Black Birds and Los Vengadores de Hogwarts leading with a record of 3-0, followed by Scarlet Fireball, who played one more game than all the other teams, with a record of 3-1. The Santiago Snidgets and Cumulus Nimbus were tied for third place with a 1-2 record, and at the end of the board, both with records of 0-3, were the Deathly Dragons and the Night Owls. It was pretty clear who would be playing in the final, although there were 11 games remaining and nothing was completely decided yet.
The second day of the Copa del Sur started with the anticipated duel of the leading teams, Los Vengadores de Hogwarts and the Black Birds. By the time the snitch came on the pitch, the Black Birds held a commanding lead with an advantage of 70 points. The Los Vengadores’ seeker ultimately made the catch, but the game finished with a win for the Black Birds, 100-60*.
The next game was technically between the Deathly Dragons Rosario and the Night Owls, but the Owls had to forfeit due to injuries, which made the final score 70*-0 in favor of the Dragons. The Owls also forfeited their upcoming games against Los Vengadores de Hogwarts and the Santiago Snidgets.
The second game of the day was between Cumulus Nimbus and the Santiago Snidgets. The Chileans surprised not only their rivals but everybody watching by showing that they have potential and will be a hard team to beat in the future. The game ended with the Snidgets catching the snitch, giving them the victory 130*-50.
The day continued with a predictable win by the Black Birds over the Deathly Dragons Rosario, 150-50* with the second snitch catch by the Dragons in the Copa; the close victory of Scarlet Fireball over Cumulus Nimbus, 80-60*; and the duel between the Black Birds and Santiago Snidgets that ended with the Argentinians winning 110-70*, guaranteeing their spot in the finals.
The next game between Scarlet Fireball and Los Vengadores de Hogwarts was very important because both had a record of 4-1, making this game the tiebreaker. The winner would be sent straight to the final. Sadly, Los Vengadores were not a match for Scarlet Fireball, who easily beat them 140-70* and got a well-deserved place in the final game of the Copa. Finally, the last game of the Round Robin, which was between Cumulus Nimbus and the Deathly Dragons Rosario, ended in an 80-70* win for Cumulus Nimbus.
The final match between the Black Birds and Scarlet Fireball was the closest game of the tournament. Neither team could pull away; meeting each other goal for goal. The Black Birds pushed an already exciting game to the limits by going 40 points up when the snitch came on pitch. Everybody was on the edge of their seats when the snitch, Santiago Contarino, entered the field. Scarlet needed to score at least once, while the Black Birds needed to keep their advantage.
Scarlet managed a goal and then a short-time later, the snitch referee blew the whistle. All heads turned towards Nicolás Camera, Scarlet’s seeker, who had the snitch in his hands. At this point, the game became tied. For the first time in Argentinian quidditch, a match went to overtime.
After a five-minute break, overtime began. Both teams were nervous because in overtime, there are only 30 seconds before the snitch is released, and the game ends when the snitch is caught or five minutes of game time has elapsed: whichever comes first. The sidelines of both teams cheered for their teammates, both of whom were determined to leave everything on the field.
One minute in, the Black Birds were up by 10 points, but everybody was paying attention to the seeker game. Black Birds’ seeker Brandon Maidana and Scarlet Fireball seeker Nicolas Camera were neck-and-neck. Then, Maidana was knocked out, leaving Camera alone with the snitch. Contarino ran away from Camera, but he managed to reach him quickly and the snitch attempts to turn to avoid a catch… and then the whistle was blown. Everybody stopped and looked at Camera, who had the tail in his hand, which he managed to catch before the snitch could turn away. The referee, Rocío Martino, blew three whistles, ending the game. Scarlet Fireball won the final match of Copa del Sur and emerged the champion of the South American tournament.
All of the Scarlet Fireball players ran onto the pitch to hug Camera and celebrate an earned victory. The Black Birds hugged each other and yelled their team chant, albeit with sadness. Following this private moment, the two teams teams lined up to hug each other. After all, both teams are good friends.
The AAQ board called all the teams in a circle and everybody laughed, hugged, and joked around. The Santiago Snidgets thanked the AAQ for the invitation to play and the rest of the players for a good tournament. In this moment, with all the teams huddled in a circle, full of laughter and high spirits, everybody realized that it does not matter what team you are a part of, as we belong to the same collection of people with a shared passion for this beautiful sport called quidditch.
Final Tournament Results:
The first day of the tournament ended with the Black Birds and Los Vengadores de Hogwarts leading with a record of 3-0, followed by Scarlet Fireball, who played one more game than all the other teams, with a record of 3-1. The Santiago Snidgets and Cumulus Nimbus were tied for third place with a 1-2 record, and at the end of the board, both with records of 0-3, were the Deathly Dragons and the Night Owls. It was pretty clear who would be playing in the final, although there were 11 games remaining and nothing was completely decided yet.
The second day of the Copa del Sur started with the anticipated duel of the leading teams, Los Vengadores de Hogwarts and the Black Birds. By the time the snitch came on the pitch, the Black Birds held a commanding lead with an advantage of 70 points. The Los Vengadores’ seeker ultimately made the catch, but the game finished with a win for the Black Birds, 100-60*.
The next game was technically between the Deathly Dragons Rosario and the Night Owls, but the Owls had to forfeit due to injuries, which made the final score 70*-0 in favor of the Dragons. The Owls also forfeited their upcoming games against Los Vengadores de Hogwarts and the Santiago Snidgets.
The second game of the day was between Cumulus Nimbus and the Santiago Snidgets. The Chileans surprised not only their rivals but everybody watching by showing that they have potential and will be a hard team to beat in the future. The game ended with the Snidgets catching the snitch, giving them the victory 130*-50.
